Literature

Album A blank book for scraps. The Romans applied the word to certain tables overlaid with gypsum, on which were inscribed the annals of the chief priests, the edicts of the prætors, and rules relating to civil matters. In the Middle Ages, "album" was the general name of a register or list; so called from being kept either on a white (albus) board with black letters, or on a black board with white letters. For the same reason the boards in churches for notices, and the boards in universities containing the names of the college men, are called albums. Source: Brewer's Dictionary.

Specialty Definition: Album

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

An album is a packaged collection of related things. The most common types of albums are record albums and photo albums.

Photo albums collect a series of photographs in a book. Some albums have compartments which the photos may be slipped in to; older style albums often were simply books of heavy paper which photos could be glued to or attached to with adhesive corners.

The term record album originally referred to a collection of 78 RPM gramophone or phonograph records kept together in a book resembling a photo album. Later "album" came to refer to a single long playing 33 1/3 RPM 12" record of songs or music, as one disc contained as much music as an old-style album of records. Now that the vinyl record is less common, the term is applied to any hard-pressed full length sound recording (including CD, Minidisc, and cassette.)

Now that albums are on CD and new media, the matter of how long an album should be is open to debate. One author suggested at least eight tracks, but there are albums of fewer tracks. According to the rules of the British Charts, a recording counts as an album if either it has at least four tracks or lasts more than 20 minutes.

Returning to the older meaning of the term, there are now albums of compact discs; collections of cds in a single package.

Graceland (album)

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

Graceland is an album released in 1986 by Paul Simon. The title track describes a visit to Graceland, Elvis Presley's estate in Memphis, Tennessee.

The album featured South African musicians including the band Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Simon faced accusations that he had broken the cultural boycott imposed by western democracies against the apartheid regime in South Africa. This view was not supported by the United Nations Anti-Apartheid Committee, as the album showcased the talents of the black South African musicians while offering no support to the South African government.

The band and Mark Dodson produced the album, which was released as a double album (along with Among the Living) in Germany in 2000. The album includes the singles, "Got the Time" and "In My World". Persistence of Time was certified gold by the RIAA.

Its highest Billboard Music Chart position was #24 on the Billboard 200 chart.

Persistence of Time stands out among other Anthrax albums due to its unified lyrical focus on the need for tolerance and peace. The ghoulish and macabre elements of the music remain, and the album is as aggressive as ever, with a rapidfire beat.

Record

(From Wikipedia, the free Encyclopedia)

Record is (as a noun) any set of data kept, and (as a verb) to set down data to be kept. Such data may be writing, audio, digital, or other media.

For the sound recording type of record that spins on a turntable, known as a phonograph record in American English and a gramophone record in British English, see analogue disc record.

In computer science, a record can be any of at least two different things.

The most common meaning is simply "an item in a database". There is a wide variety of such "records", but the most common type (the one relational databases support) is an instance of the other kind of record.

The other meaning of "record" is "an aggregation of several items of possibly different types", with the implication that there are many records containing the same types of items. C calls these "structs"; object-oriented languages often keep their records hidden inside "objects", or "class instances"; languages in the ML family have their tuples. COBOL was the first programming language to support records directly; Algol got it from COBOL, and Pascal got it, more or less indirectly, from Algol.

A record is also an extreme value that would be considered worthy of recording for posterity, e.g. in sports, weather, economics, etc.

In law, the record of a court case or administrative agency adjudication normally consists of the transcript or minutes of the proceedings, any exhibits introduced in evidence at the hearing or trial, and any motion papers filed in the case. When an appeal is taken, the appellate court reviews the decision of the trial court based on the record on appeal which consists of the record of the case from the trial court or some subset of that record. Where the original record is missing, a hearing may have to be held to reconstruct the record on appeal. Nowadays, this is rare, but was common in past centuries before stenographic equipment came into use, when transcripts of trials were not always made. (See also court of record.)
