| Palladian architecture | Palladian architecture is a European style of architecture derived from the designs of the Italian architect Andrea Palladio (1508-1580). The term "Palladian" normally refers to buildings in a style inspired by Palladio's own work; what is recognised as Palladian architecture today is an evolution of Palladio's original concepts. This evolution of Palladianism as a style began in the 17th century and continued to develop until the end of the 18th century. Palladianism became popular briefly in Britain during the mid-17th century, returned in the early 18th century and then spread to North America, most notably in the buildings designed by Thomas Jefferson. However, to understand Palladian architecture as it later evolved, one must first understand the architecture of Palladio himself. (references) | ||
| Palladian window | A Palladian window or Venetian window is a specific type of window. Although, as its names might suggest, it can indeed be found in Venice and in the work of Andrea Palladio himself as well as in the Palladian style popular in Great Britain from the 17th century on, the window has been popularly used in many other sorts and styles of architecture as well. It consists of three lights set side-by-side, the outer two of which are simple rectangles while the middle one sports a semicircular top which springs from the level of the other two lights' upper limit.
