Common Expressions: MODULI

Expressions Definition
Deligne-Mumford moduli space of curves In mathematics, the Deligne-Mumford moduli space of curves is a refined construction of a moduli space of algebraic curves, that is work from 1969 by Pierre Deligne and David Mumford. It combined two novel techniques in algebraic geometry, Mumford's geometric invariant theory and Michael Artin's algebraic stacks, to construct a moduli object (not a scheme), including enough stable curves, and for which the irreducibility of the space of curves could be proved. This last was a classical theorem, but one whose status had been the subject of dispute. (references)
Formal moduli In mathematics, formal moduli are an aspect of the theory of moduli spaces (of algebraic varieties or vector bundles, for example), closely linked to deformation theory and formal geometry. Roughly speaking, deformation theory can provide the Taylor polynomial level of information about deformations, while formal moduli theory can assemble consistent Taylor polynomials to make a formal power series theory. The step to moduli spaces, properly speaking, is an algebraization question, and has been largely put on a firm basis by Artin's approximation theorem. (references)
Moduli scheme In mathematics, a moduli scheme is a moduli space that exists in the category of schemes developed by Alexander Grothendieck. Some important moduli problems of algebraic geometry can be satisfactorily solved by means of scheme theory alone, while others require some extension of the 'geometric object' concept (algebraic spaces, algebraic stacks of Michael Artin). Moduli space In algebraic geometry, the moduli problem is to describe the parameters on which algebraic varieties depend. The use of the term modulus here for such a parameter goes back to the same source as in modular form: a modular form in general is some kind of differential form (or tensor density, since the forms come with a 'weight') on a moduli space, that is, a space whose co-ordinates are the moduli.
