Little Kanawha River The Little Kanawha River is a tributary of the Ohio River, approximately 160 mi (257 km) long, in western West Virginia in the United States, on the unglaciated Allegheny Plateau. Via the Ohio, it is part of the Mississippi River watershed. The Little Kanawha is generally slow-moving and is often muddy. It has served as an important commercial water route in the history of West Virginia, particularly in the logging and petroleum industries. (references)
State of Kanawha Kanawha was an American state formed on October 24, 1861. It consisted of several northwestern counties of Virginia, which separated after that state joined the Confederate States of America on April 17, 1861 at the beginning of the American Civil War (1861-1865). The separation had been approved by the loyalist Reorganized Government of Virginia on August 20, 1861. It was named for the Kanawha River, which was named for the Canawese ("White Stone") Native American tribe. (references)
