| Kingda Ka |
Kingda Ka is the tallest and fastest roller coaster in the world, found at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, New Jersey, claiming the title from Top Thrill Dragster in Cedar Point. It opened in May 2005 as part of a new area of the theme park called Golden Kingdom, which also includes a new tiger exhibit, "Temple of the Tiger". Kingda Ka utilizes a hydraulic launch mechanism to accelerate the riders from 0 to 128 miles per hour (206 km/h) in 3.5 seconds. At the end of the launch track, riders climb the main tower, reaching a height of 456 feet (139 m). Riders then descend 418 feet (127 m) straight down in a 270-degree spiral, followed by a moment of weightlessness as they soar over a 129 foot (39 m) tall hill and then glide back into the station. It is possible (but rare) for a train to fail to reach the top of the tower, so Kingda Ka includes retractable brakes on its launch track that will bring a train rolling backwards down the tower safely to a stop. Many coaster enthusiasts look forward to being on this, but many non-coaster enthusiasts may not realize that this is completely safe. Kingda Ka's launch mechanism is capable of launching a train every 45 seconds, resulting in a capacity of 1400 guests per hour. The coaster was officially opened on May 20, 2005. (references) |
