Eight Immortals The Eight Immortals (八仙 in pinyin: bā xiān; in Wade-Giles: pa hsien) are Chinese deities who are represented as a group and rarely individually. Each Immortal's power can be transferred to a tool of power (法器) that can give life or destroy evil. Together, these eight tools are called "Covert Eight Immortals" (暗八仙 àn ~). Most of them are said to have been born in Tang Dynasty or Song Dynasty. Not only are they worshipped by the Daoists, but they are a popular element in the secular Chinese culture. Eight Immortals Indulged in Wine The Eight Immortals Indulged in Wine (酒中八仙 in pinyin: jiǔzhōng bāxīan) are Tang Dynasty scholars who liked to drink. They are not deified. The term is used by Du Fu in his poem. It is also used in the biography of Li Bo in the New Tang Book (新唐書). (references)
Eight Immortals Mountain Located in central Taiwan, Pa-hsien Mountain (八仙山 ba1 xian1 shan1), or Eight Immortals Mountain, is a branch of Yü Shan. Its height is 2448 metres, which is around 8000 Taiwanese metres (台尺). The pronunciation of eight thousand (baqian) and eight immortals are similar in Chinese, hence the name. (references)
Eight Immortals of Communist China The Eight Immortals were a group of elderly members of the Communist Party of China who held substantial power during the 1980s and 1990s. In Chinese, however, they are called instead the Eight Great Eminent Officials (八大元老 in pinyin: bā dà yuán lǎo), abbreviated as the Eight Elders (八老 bā lǎo). By 2000 most of the Immortals had died. Eight Immortals of Huainan The Eight Immortals of Huainan (淮南八仙 in pinyin: huái nán bā xiān), also known as the Eight Gentlemen (八公 bā gōng), were the eight scholars under the patronage of Liu An (劉安 liú ān), the prince of Huainan during the Western Han Dynasty. They are not deified in any religions and the term "Immortal" is used metaphorically to describe their talent. Together, they wrote the book The Philosophers of Huainan (《淮南子》 huái nán zǐ), on the Daoist philosophy. (references)
