| Hispaniolan Pine | The Hispaniolan Pine (Pinus occidentalis) is a pine endemic to the island of Hispaniola, where it is the predominant species in the Hispaniolan pine forests of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Hispaniolan Pines are found mixed with broadleaf trees from 850 meters elevation to 2100 meters elevation, and occur in pure stands above 2100 meters elevation up to the 3087 m summit of Pico Duarte, the highest point on the island. They are sometimes found in the lowland Hispaniolan moist forests ecoregion, in areas where poor acidic laterite soils predominate. (references) | ||
| Hispaniolan pine forests | The Hispaniolan pine forests are a tropical coniferous forest ecoregion found on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola. The ecoregion covers 11,600 km² (4,500 square miles) or about 15% of the island. The ecoregion lies above 850 meters elevation in the mountains of Hispaniola, extending from the Cordillera Central of the Dominican Republic and into the northern massif of Haiti. It is surrounded at lower elevations by the Hispaniolan moist forests and Hispaniolan dry forests ecoregions, which covers the remainder of the island. (references) | ||
