Literature 1: Halifax (in Nova Scotia). So called by the Hon. Edward Cornwallis, the governor, in compliment to his patron, the Earl of Halifax (1749).
2: Halifax That is, halig fax or holy hair. Its previous name was Horton. The story is that a certain clerk of Horton, being jilted, murdered his quondam sweetheart by cutting off her head, which he hung in a yew-tree. The head was looked on with reverence, and came to be regarded as a holy relic. In time it rotted away, leaving little filaments or veins spreading out between the bark and body of the tree like fine threads. Wood, 1st Earl of Halifax The Right Honourable Edward Frederick Lindley Wood, 1st Earl of Halifax, KG, OM, GCSI, GCIE, PC (16 April 1881-23 December 1959), known as The Lord Irwin from 1925 until 1934 and as The Viscount Halifax from 1934 until 1944, was a British Conservative politician. He is often regarded as one of the architects of appeasement prior to World War II. During the period he held several ministerial posts in the cabinet. He succeeded Lord Reading as Governor General and Viceroy of India in April 1926, a post he held until 1931. (references)
Earl of Halifax The title of Earl of Halifax has been created several times in British history. The first creation, in the Peerage of England in 1679, was for George Savile, 1st Viscount Halifax, who was later made Marquess of Halifax. This creation became extinct in 1700. The title was recreated in the Peerage of Great Britain in 1714 for Charles Montagu, 1st Baron Halifax, First Lord of the Treasury to George I. When he died a year later, the title was recreated in 1715 for his nephew, this version becoming extinct in 1771. The present title was created in the Peerage of the United Kingdom in 1944 for Edward Frederick Lindley Wood, 3rd Viscount Halifax, the former Foreign Secretary and Viceroy of India. (references)
