Date "Hydrothermal" was first used in popular English literature: sometime before 1833. (references)

Note: Hydrothermal \Hy`dro*ther"mal\, adjective. [Hydro-, thermal.]. (references)

Specialty Definition: HYDROTHERMAL

Domain Definition
Administration (1) Having to do with hot water, especially having to do with the action of hot water in producing minerals and springs or in dissolving, shifting, and otherwise changing the distribution of minerals in the earths crust. (2) (Geology) Of or relating to hot magmatic emanations rich in water. Of or relating to the rocks, ore deposits, and springs produced by such emanations. (references)
Geological Pertains to hot water or the action of heated water, often considered heated by magma or in association with magma. (Gardner, et al., 1995). (references)
Mining 1: Of or pertaining to hot water, to the action of hot water, or to the products of this action, such as a mineral deposit precipitated from a hot aqueous solution, with or without demonstrable association with igneous processes; also, said of the solution itself. Hydrothermal is generally used for any hot water but has been restricted by some to water of magmatic origin. (references)
2: Of or relating to hot water - used esp. of the formation of metamorphism of minerals by the action of hot solutions rising up through the earth's crust from a cooling magma. Source: European Union. (references)

Common Expressions: HYDROTHERMAL

Expressions Definition
Hydrothermal circulation Hydrothermal circulation in the oceans is the passage of the water through mid-oceanic ridge systems. (references)
Hydrothermal emeralds Hydrothermal method is based on transformation of melted crashed emeralds and their deposit around the beryl seed in a hydrothermal environment. The crashed low grade emeralds, known as nutrient, are melted along with color inducing chemicals, such as Vanadium and Chromium, that are ones of the nature’s coloring agents in emeralds, and deposited onto a natural beryl seed. The seed, being a larger and more solid element in the process, attracts the smaller particles of the same origin and the growth process begins, putting layer upon layer on itself. This is the reason for undulated growth lines in hydrothermal gems. The process takes around four weeks. If the process is slowed down, the “layers” are deposited at a slower rate, resulting in growth lines being less defined and more difficult to detect. (references)
Hydrothermal vent A hydrothermal vent is a fissure in a planet's surface from which geothermally heated water issues. Hydrothermal vents are commonly found in places that are also volcanically active, where hot magma is relatively near the planet's surface. (references)

Specialty Expressions: HYDROTHERMAL

Expressions Domain Definition
Hydrothermal alteration Geological Alteration of rocks or minerals by the reaction of hot water (and other fluids) with pre-existing rocks. The hot water is generally heated groundwater and dissolved minerals. (Gardner, et.al., 1995). (references)
Hydrothermal alteration Geology Hydrothermal alteration is the alteration of rocks or minerals due to the reactions of geothermally heated water with minerals. The process weathers and weakens the rocks such that they may become unstable. (references)
Hydrothermal deposit Administration (Geology) A mineral deposit formed when hot, aqueous solutions fill fractures or other open spaces in rocks or along faults. The minerals crystallize as the solutions cool. (references)
Hydrothermal deposit Mining 1: A mineral deposit formed by the precipitation of metallic ions from water ranging in temperature from 50 to 700C. (references)
2: A mineral deposit that originated from hot, ascending aqueous solutionsderived from a magma. CF:hypothermal deposit. (references)
Hydrothermal fluids Energy These fluids can be either water or steam trapped in fractured or porous rocks; they are found from several hundred feet to several miles below the Earth's surface. The temperatures vary from about 90 F to 680 F (32 C to 360 C) but roughly 2/3 range in temperature from 150 F to 250 F (65.5 C to 121.1 C). The latter are the easiest to access and, therefore, the only forms being used commercially. (references)
Hydrothermal Reservoir Administration One of three geothermal reservoir systems. It consists of naturally circulating hot water or steam ("wet steam") or that which contains mostly vapor ("dry steam"). The latter type of reservoir is the most desirable type according to present technology. Also see Geothermal Energy. (references)
Hydrothermal Solution Administration A hot, watery solution that usually emanates from a magma in the late stages of cooling. Frequently contains and deposits in economically workable concentrations minor elements that, because of incommensurate ionic radii or electronic charges, have not been able to fit into the atomic structures of the common minerals of igneous rocks (rocks formed by volcanic activity). (references)
Hydrothermal solution Mining A hot-water solution originating within the Earth and carrying dissolved mineral substances. Syn:ore-bearing fluid; ore-forming fluid. (references)
Hydrothermal stage Mining That stage in the cooling of a magma during which the residual fluid is strongly enriched in water and other volatiles. The exact limits of the stage are variously defined by different authors, in terms of phase assemblage, temperature, composition, and/or vapor pressure; most definitions consider it as the last stage of igneous activity, coming at a later time, and hence at a lower temperature, than the pegmatitic stage. (references)
Hydrothermal synthesis Mining Mineral synthesis in the presence of water at elevated temperatures. (references)
Hydrothermal systems Physics Underground reservoirs that produce either dry steam or a mixture of steam and water. (references)
Hydrothermal vent Environment A hot spring on the seafloor. (references)
Hydrothermal vent Geology 1: A natural spring which vents warm or hot water on the sea floor; associated with spreading of the Earth's crust. (references)
2: (n) A place on the seafloor, generally associated with spreading centers, where warm to super-hot, mineral-rich water is released; may support a diverse community of organisms. (references)

Source: calculated by Eve using graph theory. "Intensity" is a score indicating the number of overlapping cliques where the word pair is found (an integer before the decimal); the first digit after the decimal is the number of overlapping terminal characters up to 9; the second characters is number of leading common characters up to 9; the last two digits measure the Levenshtein distance subtracted from 100.
