Common Expressions: HOSTING

Expressions Definition
Bullet proof hosting Bulletproof hosting (sometimes known as 'bulk-friendly' hosting) is a service provided by domain hosts which allows their customer considerable leniency in the kinds of material they may upload. This leniency has been taken advantage of by spammers and providers of online gambling or pornography. (references)
Clustered hosting Clustered hosting technology is designed to eliminate the problems inherent with typical shared hosting infrastructures. This technology provides customers with a “clustered” handling of security, load balancing, and necessary Web site resources. (references)
Dedicated hosting Dedicated hosting, also called dedicated server hosting, is a type of hosting that allows an organization to lease an entire server not shared with anyone. This is more flexible than shared hosting, as organizations have full control over the server(s), including choice of operating system, hardware, etc. Server administration can usually be provided by the hosting company as an add-on service. In some cases a dedicated server can offer less overhead and a larger return on investment. (references)
File hosting File hosting is the term used to describe a special form of web hosting, specifically hosting static content. (references)
Free hosting Most free web hosts discourage using their services for file or image hosting only, with no web page. Because of this, Hotlinking is usually disallowed on free hosts. Another reason why hotlinking is disabled is because it allows other sites to link directly to files on a hosted website (effectively stealing their bandwidth). Some free webhosts will also disallow files over a certain size (for example, 1MB). However, there are free hosts called 'file hosts' which are specially made to host files, and allow large files as well as hotlinking. (references)
Image hosting Image hosting is a service that allows individuals to have the ability to upload different types of images to the Internet. The image host will then store the image onto its server, and show the individual different types of code to allow others to view that image. Because many users do not have personal webspace, either as a paid service, or through an ISP offering, Image Hosting services have become massively popular as the demand for hosting services increases. With the explosion of the popularity of blogs, forums, and other interactive pages, image hosting services have become extremely popular among end users. (references)
Reseller hosting Reseller hosting is a form of web hosting wherein the account owner may split up their allotted hard drive space and bandwidth and resell web hosting. (references)
Shared hosting One's Web site is placed on the same server as several hundred other sites. A problem with another site on the server can bring all of the sites down. Shared hosting also brings with it some restrictions regarding what exactly can be done, although these restrictions are nowhere near as restrictive as for free hosting. (references)
Temporary hosting Temporary hosting is a type of webmail. (references)
Virtual hosting Virtual hosting is a method that servers such as Webservers use to host more than one domain name on the same computer, sometimes on the same IP address. (references)
