Fort Hoo, like Fort Darnet was built on the recommendations of the 1859 Royal Commission on an island covering the inner navigable channel of the River Medway, Kent. Originally designed for 2 tiers of guns mounted in a circle, with a boom strung between them, there were many problems with subsidence, and after extensive cost overruns the forts were completed in 1871 with 1 tier, and 11 guns, a mixture of 9" and 7" RMLs, and no boom. The forts were never used in anger, and were disarmed before WWI. In WWII the fort was used as observation posts, with platforms and pillboxes built on top. Currently the fort is in fair condition, but owned by the Ministry of Defence, and landing is not allowed. (references)

Luton Hoo

South-west facade of Luton Hoo, Bedfordshire. Luton Hoo is a mansion in Bedfordshire, England, on the edge of the large town of Luton. The unusual name "Hoo" is a saxon word meaning the spur of a hill, and is more commonly found in East Anglia. Luton Hoo is not mentioned in the Domesday book, but a family called de Hoo occupied a manor house on the site in the 13th century. Successive houses on the site seem to have changed hands several times until in 1762 the then owner, Francis Hearne (MP for Bedford), sold the estate for £94,700 to John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute. Following an unhappy period as Prime Minister from 1762 to 1763, Bute decided to concentrate his energies on his Bedfordshire estate at Luton Hoo. (references)

Sim Wong Hoo is the CEO of Creative Technology, the pioneer of computer sound systems. He got his start running Creative as a computer repair shop in his home country of Singapore. While doing this he developed an add-on memory board for the Apple II computer that they sold as well. Later, Creative started creating customized PCs adapted for the Chinese language which included enhanced audio capabilities so that the device could produce speech and melodies. The success of this audio interface led to the development of a stand-alone sound card that Creative marketed. Creative then continued primarily in the sound card field until diversifying into other related hardware such as CD-ROM and DVD players, graphics cards, digital audio players, and Prodikeys.
