Consistent histories In quantum mechanics, the consistent histories approach is intended to give a modern interpretation of quantum mechanics, generalising the conventional Copenhagen interpretation and providing a natural interpretation of quantum cosmology. Some believe that this derives from the work by Hugh Everett and is a modern version of the many-worlds interpretation. Others strongly disagree. The theory is based on a consistency criterion that then allows the history of a system to be described so that the probabilities for each history obey the rules of classical probability while being consistent with the Schrödinger equation. English Catholic parish histories After the Reformation the Catholic Church in England went underground to avoid persecution. During this time Catholic worship centred mainly on the estates of aristocratic Recusant families who refused to conform to the Church of England. Multiple histories The concept of multiple histories is closely related to the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics. In the same way that the many-worlds interpretation regard possible futures as having a real existence of their own, the theory of multiple histories reverses this in time to regard the many possible past histories of a given event as having real existence.
