| State Historic Preservation Officer | The State Historic Preservation Office is a federally mandated office that is funded by the individual states. The State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO) is responsible for identifying and maintaining historic properties and archaeological sites located in his/her individual state. The State Historic Preservation Office is also responsible for coordinating with federal and tribal agencies in accordance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966. Section 106 requires any federal agency, party who receives federal funding or receives a federal permit to consult with the SHPO to determine any potential effect of an undertaking may have on archaeological sites/historic properties.
