| High altitude | High altitude are regions on the Earth's surface (or in its atmosphere) that are high above mean sea level. The composition and temperature of the atmosphere at high altitude is substantially different than at sea level. These differences can affect living organisms, including humans. High altitude is sometimes defined to begin at 1500 m above sea level. (references) | ||
| High altitude balloon | High altitude balloons are balloons, usually filled with helium, that are released into the upper atmosphere, generally reaching between 60,000 and 120,000 feet. (references) | ||
| High Altitude Pulmonary Edema | High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) is a life threatening form of non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema that occurs in otherwise healthy mountaineers at altitudes above 2500m. Some cases have however been reported also at lower altitudes (between 1500 and 2500m in highly vulnerable subjects). HAPE remains the major cause of death related to high exposure with a high mortality in absence of emergency treatment. (references) | ||
| Nubian E-065 High Altitude Air Speeder | In the Star Wars films, the Nubian E-065 High Altitude Air Speeder is a fictional spaceship design from before the fall of the Old Republic, built by the shipyards of the planet Nubia. Like their starships, this one was made to be streamlined and graceful, and also has a large aerodynamic surface for a gliding to a safe landing if the ship lose power. (references) | ||
| Super High Altitude Research Project | The Super High Altitude Research Project (SHARP) was a U.S. government project to fire a high-velocity projectile into the atmosphere. (references) | ||
| Terminal High Altitude Area Defense | Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD - formerly "Theater High Altitude Area Defense") is a United States Army project to develop a anti-ballistic missile defense system, against theater or regional threats. THAAD is intended to destroy incoming missiles by firing its own interceptor missile at the threat. The THAAD missile does not carry an explosive warhead and destroys incoming missiles by colliding with them, utilizing hit-to-kill-technology, unlike similar systems such as the MIM-104 Patriot. The THAAD system was designed to handle short and medium range ballistic missiles; such as Scuds and derived weapons. However, a limited incidental capability against ICBMs exists. (references) | ||
