Expressions Definition
Canadian Subject Headings Canadian Subject Headings (CSH) is a list of subject headings in the English language, using controlled vocabulary, to access and express the topic content of documents on Canada and Canadian topics. The headings are complementary to the United States Library of Congress Subject Headings. The National Library of Canada published a list of CSH used in Canadian cataloguing. (references)
Library of Congress Subject Headings The Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) comprise a thesaurus (in the information technology sense) of subject headings, maintained by the United States Library of Congress, for use in bibliographic records. LC Subject Headings are an integral part of bibliographic control, which is the function by which libraries collect, organize and disseminate documents. LCSHs are applied to every item within a library’s collection, and facilitate a user’s access to items in the catalogue that pertain to similar subject matter. If users could only locate items by ‘title’ or other descriptive fields, such as ‘author’ or ‘publisher’, they would have to expend an enormous amount of time searching for items of related subject matter, and undoubtedly miss locating many items because of the ineffective and inefficient search capability. (references)
Medical Subject Headings Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) is a huge controlled vocabulary (or metadata system) for the purpose of indexing journal articles and books in the life sciences. Created and updated by the United States National Library of Medicine (NLM), it is used by the Medline article database and by NLM's catalog of book holdings. MeSH can be browsed and downloaded free of charge on the internet; a printed version is published once a year. (references)

Double headings Mining The driving of two coal headings, parallel and side by side, for development purposes. Usually a pillar 10 to 20 yd (9.14 to 18.29 m) wide is left between them. Formerly it was the practice at many coal mines to drive only one heading from which the stalls were turned off right and left. Two headings simplify ventilation and provide a second egress in an emergency. (references)
