Important political figures such as Konrad Adenauer, Winston Churchill, Harold Macmillan, François Mitterrand, Paul-Henry Spaak, Albert Coppé and Altiero Spinelli took an active role in the congress and a call was launched for a political, economic and monetary Union of Europe. Hague Academy of International Law The Hague Academy of International Law is a center for high-level education in both public and private international law housed in the Peace Palace in The Hague, The Netherlands. Courses are taught in English and French, and except for External Programme Courses are held in the Peace Palace.The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace helped in the creation of the Academy, which was founded in 1914, and opened its doors in 1923. Nobel Peace Prize winner Tobias Asser advocated for the creation of the Academy before his death in 1913. The Academy is closely associated with the International Court of Justice, which is also housed in the Peace Palace. Several current or former ICJ Judges either are alumnus or have served on the faculty. In 1992, the Academy received the Félix Houphouët-Boigny Peace Prize from UNESCO. (references)
Hague Conference on Private International Law The Hague Conference on Private International Law is the preeminent organisation in the area of private international law. Since its formation in 1893, the purpose of HCCH has been to “work for the progressive unification of the rules of private international law”. It has pursued this goal by creating and assisting in the implementation of multilateral conventions promoting the harmonisation of conflict of laws principles in diverse subject matters within private international law. Sixty-five States, among them the United States of America and all Member States of the European Union are currently members of the Hague Conference. (references)

Hague Service Convention The Hague Service Convention, or the Convention on the Service Abroad of Judicial and Extrajudicial Documents in Civil or Commercial Matters, is a multilateral treaty signed in The Hague on 15 November 1965 by the members of the Hague Conference on Private International Law. It allows service of judicial documents from one signatory state to another without recourse to consular and diplomatic channels. It was not the first Convention to tackle the issue of service between states, the 1905 Civil Procedure Convention also signed in The Hague also contained clauses dealing with service. That earlier convention did not command wide support and was only ratified by 22 countries. (references)
