Date "Fungi" was first used in popular English literature: sometime before 1741. (references)

Specialty Definition: Fungi

Domain Definition
Administration (Singular, Fungus) Molds, mildews, yeasts, mushrooms, and puff-balls, a group organisms that lack chlorophyll (i.e., are not photosynthetic) and which are usually non-mobile, filamentous, and multicellular. Some grow in the ground, others attach themselves to decaying trees and other plants, getting their nutrition from decomposing organic matter. Some cause disease, others stabilize sewage and break down solid wastes in composting. (references)
Aerospace 1: The allophytic plants that lack chlorophyll and are filamentous in structure; molds. (references)
2: Simple plants that lack chlorophyll and are composed of cellular filamentous growth known as hyphae. Many fungi, but their fruiting bodies, viz. mushrooms and puffballs are quite large. in composting: saprophytic or parasitic multinucleate organisms with branching filaments called hyphae, forming a mass called a mycelium; fungi bring about cellulolysis and humification of the substrate during stabilization. (references)
3: Any of numerous eukaryotic organisms of the kingdom Fungi, which lack chlorophyll and vascular tissue and range in form from a single cell to a body mass of branched filamentous hyphae that often produce specialized fruiting bodies. The kingdom includes the yeasts, molds, smuts, and mushrooms. (references)
4: Fungi are any of a large group of plants which do not contain chlorophyll, including the yeasts, molds, and mushrooms. (references)
Agriculture Mushrooms, molds, mildews, rusts, and smuts that are small non-chlorophyll-bearing plants lacking roots, stems and leaves. They occur in natural waters and grow best in the absence of light. Their decomposition may cause objectionable tastes and odors in water. (references)
Business Any of a group of parasitic lower plants that lack chlorophyll, including molds and mildews. (references)
Energy 1: Plant-like organisms with cells with distinct nuclei surrounded by nuclear membranes, incapable of photosynthesis. Fungi are decomposers of waste organisms and exist as yeast, mold, or mildew. (references)
2: Fungi are plant-like organisms with cells with distinct nuclei surrounded by nuclear membranes, incapable of photosynthesis. Fungi are decomposers of waste organisms and exist as yeast, mold, or mildew. (references)
Health A kingdom of eukaryotic, heterotrophic organisms that live as saprobes or parasites, including mushrooms, yeasts, smuts, molds, etc. They reproduce either sexually or asexually, and have life cycles that range from simple to complex. Filamentous fungi refer to those that grow as multicelluar colonies (mushrooms and molds). (references)
Mining Mushrooms, mold, yeast. They take part in decomposition. (references)
Weather Molds, mildews, yeasts, mushrooms, and puffballs, a group of organisms that lack chlorophyll and therefore are not photosynthetic. They are usually nonmobile, filamentous, and multicellular. (references)

Basidiomycetous fungi Any of various fungi of the subdivision Basidiomycota. Source: Wordnet 3.0 Copyright © 2006 by Princeton University. All rights reserved.
Bracket Fungi Bracket Fungus is a generic name for the thousand or more species of Fungus that grow protruding like a shelf from the trunks of trees. Their name comes from their growing partially around the trunk, to form a shape rather like a bracket. (references)
Coral fungi Coral fungi are mushrooms that are so named due to their appearance to aquatic coral. Generally edible but typically too small to be worth gathering, some have been reported to have strong laxative effects. They are similar in structure to both jelly fungi and club fungi. (references)
Enslaver Fungi Enslaver Fungi refer in general to parasitic species of fungal pathogen, usually of insect hosts that display some degree of psionic control over the individual they inhabit and eventually kill. (references)
Fungi imperfecti Large and heterogeneous form division of fungi comprising forms for which no sexually reproductive stage is known. Source: Wordnet 3.0 Copyright © 2006 by Princeton University. All rights reserved.
Jelly fungi The Class Heterobasidiomycetes or jelly fungi is a paraphyletic group of several fungal orders: Tremellales, Auriculariales, Dacryomycetales. These "mushrooms" are so named because their foliose to irregularly branched fruiting body is, or appears to be, the consistency of jelly. Actually, many are somewhat rubbery and gelatinous. When dried, jelly fungi become hard and shriveled; when exposed to water, they return to their original form. (references)
Kingdom Fungi The taxonomic kingdom including yeast, molds, smuts, mushrooms, and toadstools; distinct from the green plants. Source: Wordnet 3.0 Copyright © 2006 by Princeton University. All rights reserved.
Multicellular fungi Multicelluar fungi are multicellular fungi. They are made of filaments called hyphae, and a collection of hypae is known as a mycelium. They lack barriers such as cell walls or membranes to divide one cell from another, so the cytoplasm is shared between cells. (references)
Mycorrhizal fungi Mycorrhizal fungi refer to species of fungi that form a symbiotic relationship with plants, exchanging nutrients at fungal/root membrane interfaces. (references)
Sterile Fungi The Sterile Fungi, or mycelia sterilia are a group of fungi that do not produce any known spores, either sexual or asexual. This is considered a form group, not a taxonomic division, and is used as a matter of convenience. Because these fungi do not produce spores, it is impossible to use traditional methods of morphological comparison to classify them. However, molecular techniques can be applied to determine their evolutionary history. (references)
