Specialty Expressions: Fresnel

Expressions Domain Definition
Fresnel diffraction pattern Business Synonym near-field diffraction pattern. (references)
Fresnel lens Business A relatively thin lens consisting of a series of concentric stepped rings, each one being a section of a curved surface. The combined effect of all the rings is the same as that of a simple lens with the same diameter and curvature. (references)
Fresnel lens Energy An optical device for concentrating light that is made of concentric rings that are faced at different angles so that light falling on any ring is focused to the same point. (references)
Fresnel lens Military A type of optic consisting of a convex lens and many prisms of glass which focus and intensify the light through reflection and refraction. (references)
Fresnel reflection Business In optics, the reflection of a portion of incident light at a discrete interface between two media having different refractive indices. Note 1: Fresnel reflection occurs at the air-glass interfaces at the entrance and exit ends of an optical fiber. Resultant transmission losses, on the order of 4% per interface, can be reduced considerably by the use of index-matching materials. Note 2: The coefficient of reflection depends upon the refractive index difference, the angle of incidence, and the polarization of the incident radiation. For a normal ray, the fraction of reflected incident power is given by R = (n - n)/(n + n), where R is the reflection coefficient and n and n are the respective refractive indices of the two media. In general, the greater the angle of incidence with respect to the normal, the greater the Fresnel reflection coefficient, but for radiation that is linearly polarized in the plane of incidence, there is zero reflection at Brewster's angle. Note 3: Macroscopic optical elements may be given antireflection coatings consisting of one or more dielectric thin-film layers having specific refractive indices and thicknesses. Antireflection coatings reduce overall Fresnel reflection by mutual interference of individual Fresnel reflections at the boundaries of the individual layers. (references)
Fresnel reflection Weather The reflection of a radar signal from a single, dominating discontinuity of the refractive index, usually with a large horizontal extent. Also called "partial reflection" because only a small fraction of the incident power is reflected, "specular reflection" if the horizontal surface discontinuity is assumed to be smooth, or "diffuse reflection" if the discontinuity is assumed to be corrugated or somewhat rough. (references)
Fresnel region Aerospace The region between the antenna and the Fraunhofer region. If the antenna has a well-defined aperture a in a given aspect, the Fresnel region is that aspect is commonly taken to extend a distance 2aa / in that aspect, being the wavelength. (references)
Fresnel scatter Weather Scatter which occurs if several or many refractive index discontinuities exist along the pointing direction. The difference between Fresnel reflection and scatter may be primarily a matter of resolution of the sampling volume compared to the size of the reflecting target. (references)
Fresnel zone Aerospace Any one of the array of concentric surfaces in space between transmitter and receiver (or between radar antenna and target) over which the increase in distance over the straight line path is equal to some multiple of one-half wavelength. Also called half-period zone. See interference region. Outside of rather unusual multipath transmission of radio energy in the free atmosphere, Fresnel zones are of importance primarily in studying the interference lobes produced by the interaction of a direct and a surface-reflected wave. Thus, for a given path, reflected radio energy arriving at the receiver from any point along any of the surface Fresnel zones will be some multiple of 180 out of phase with the direct wave, thereby producing destructive or constructive interference as the multiple is odd or even, respectively. (references)
Fresnel zone Business In radio communications, one of a (theoretically infinite) number of a concentric ellipsoids of revolution which define volumes in the radiation pattern of a (usually) circular aperture. Note 1: The cross section of the first Fresnel zone is circular. Subsequent Fresnel zones are annular in cross section, and concentric with the first. Note 2: Odd-numbered Fresnel zones have relatively intense field strengths, whereas even numbered Fresnel zones are nulls. Note 3: Fresnel zones result from diffraction by the circular aperture.
