| Frau Ava |
Ava (c.1060-1127) was the first woman to write poetry in the German language. She is traditionally known as "Frau Ava", but James Rushing, who translated her work into English, has argued that the "Frau" is patronising, since we do not use an equivalent gender indicator with male poets of the period. Frau Farbissina is a character, played by Mindy Sterling, from the Austin Powers series of movies. She is the attack and defense specialist for Dr. Evil. The character is based on From Russia With Love's Rosa Klebb. She has a German accent, and started the militant wing of the Salvation Army. Her name, 'Farbissina' is a take-off of the Yiddish word 'farbissen' or 'embittered'. (references) |

Frau im Mond is a science fiction silent movie released in 1929, and is often considered to be one of the first "serious" science fiction films. The title Frau im Mond translates to "Woman in the Moon". It was written and directed by Fritz Lang, based on the novel Die Frau im Mond (1928, translated as The Rocket to the Moon in 1930) by his then-wife and collaborator Thea von Harbou. It was released in the USA as By Rocket To The Moon, and in the UK as Woman In The Moon. (references) |
