Charles Fourier François Marie Charles Fourier was a French utopian socialist. He was born on April 7, 1772 and he died on October 10, 1837. Fourier inspired the founding of the communist community called La Reunion near present-day Dallas, Texas as well as several other communities within the United States of America. (references)
Convergence of Fourier series Rich field of research, sometimes called classic harmonic analysis, a branch of pure mathematics. For most engineering uses of Fourier analysis, convergence is generally simply assumed without justification; this article shows that convergence is not necessarily a given in the general case, and discusses the criteria which need to be met for convergence to occur. (references)
Discrete-time Fourier transform The discrete-time Fourier transform (or DTFT) is part of the family of Fourier transforms. It transforms a function f(n) of a discrete "time" variable n where n \in \mathbb{Z}. The DTFT produces a continuous, periodic spectrum F(e^{i \omega}). (references)

Fourier optics To explain the basic principle of Fourier optics, it might be useful to consider the analogue with acoustics: If an arbitrary sound is analyzed through a spectrum analyzer, you will get all the different frequencies and their individual amplitudes that, together, form the sound. You can imagine that in a female soprano voice there are much more high frequency components than in a male bass voice. (references)

Fourier theorem In mathematics, the Fourier theorem is a theorem stating that a periodic function f(x), which is reasonably continuous, may be expressed as the sum of a series of sine and cosine terms (called the Fourier series), each of which has specific amplitude and phase coefficients known as Fourier coefficients. The theorem was developed by the French mathematician J.B. Fourier around 1800. (references)
Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry, also known as Fourier transform mass spectrometry, is a type of mass analyzer (or mass spectrometer) for determining the mass to charge ratio (m/z) of ions based on the cyclotron frequency of the ions in a fixed magnetic field. The ions are trapped in a Penning trap (a magnetic field with electric trapping plates) where they are excited to a larger cyclotron radius by an oscillating electric field perpendicular to the magnetic field. The excitation also results in the ions moving in phase (in a packet). The signal is detected as an image current on a pair of plates which the packet of ions passes close to as they cyclotron. The resulting signal is called a free induction decay (fid), transient or interferogram that consists of a superposition of sine waves. The useful signal is extracted from this data by performing a Fourier transform to give a mass spectrum. Specifically a fast Fourier transform (FFT) is usually used to transform the discrete fid data. (references)
Fractional Fourier transform The fractional Fourier transform (FRFT) is a linear transformation generalizing the continuous Fourier transform, which can be thought of as the Fourier transform to the n-th power where n need not be an integer — thus, it can transform a function to an intermediate domain between time and frequency. Its applications range from filter design and signal analysis to phase retrieval and pattern recognition. (references)

Generalized Fourier series The relation \sim becomes equality if Φ is a complete set, i.e., an orthonormal basis of the space of all square-integrable functions on [a, b], as opposed to a smaller orthonormal set, provided the convergence of the series is understood to be convergence in mean square and not necessarily pointwise convergence, nor convergence almost everywhere. Half range fourier series A Fourier series with range a < x < b can be extended to include the range -L < x < L. Also this can be used to give the series either odd or even properties useful in solving Differential Equations. (references)

Quantum Fourier transform The quantum Fourier transform is the discrete Fourier transform with a particular decomposition into a product of simpler unitary matrices. Using this decomposition, the discrete Fourier transform can be implemented as a quantum circuit consisting of Hadamard gates and controlled phase shift gates. (references)
Short-time Fourier transform The short-time Fourier transform (STFT), or alternatively short-term Fourier transform, is a Fourier-related transform used to determine the sinusoidal frequency and phase content of local sections of a signal as it changes over time. (references)

Fast Fourier Transform Computing (FFT) An algorithm for computing the Fourier transform of a set of discrete data values. Given a finite set of data points, for example a periodic sampling taken from a real-world signal, the FFT expresses the data in terms of its component frequencies.
