Division of Flinders Australian Electoral Division in Victoria. The division was created in 1901 and is named for Matthew Flinders, the first man to circumnavigate Australia. Originally a country seat south and east of Melbourne, Flinders has been gradually cut back to the outer southern suburbs on the Mornington Peninsula, including Dromana, Hastings and Portsea. It has usually been a fairly safe seat for the Liberal Party and its predecessors, but has occasionally been won by the Australian Labor Party, most famously in 1929 when Prime Minister Stanley Bruce was defeated. Flinders Street, Melbourne Flinders Street is a notable street in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Running roughly parallel to the Yarra River, Flinders Street forms the southern edge of the Hoddle Grid;it is exactly one mile in length and one and half chains in width. It is named for the explorer Matthew Flinders, who was (erroneously) credited with discovering Port Phillip Bay at the time of its naming. It extends eastwards as far as Spring Street and the Treasury Gardens, and westwards past Batman's Hill to the Melbourne Docklands. As the closest street to the river, Flinders Street serviced Melbourne's original river port. Customs House, now the site for Victoria's Immigration Museum, is situated on Flinders Street. Flinders Wharf Apartments Flinders Wharf Apartments are sandwiched between Melbourne's Yarra River and Flinders Street. The 300-apartment complex is home to a multicultural blend of personalities and is a short walk from Spencer Street Station, Flinders Street Station, Crown Casino and many of Melbourne's other attractions. Most of the complex consists of residents who either own or lease their apartment.
