2. The ratio of the number of observations in a statistical category to the total number of observations.[Wordnet].
3. The number of observations in a given statistical category.[Wordnet].
4. The condition of returning frequently; occurrence often repeated; common occurence; as, the frequency of crimes; the frequency of miracles.[Websters].

Date "Frequencies" was first used in popular English literature: sometime before 1826. (references)

Specialty Definition: FREQUENCIES

Domain Definition
Aerospace The number of cycles of a vibrating object (including wave cycles) per unit of time, usually the second. A common unit for measuring cycles per second is called the Hertz (Hz), after Heinrich Hertz (1857-1894), the scientist who is famous for his studies of electromagnetic waves. (references)

IMTS Frequencies The IMTS frequencies listed below (in MHz) are those used in the Improved Mobile Telephone System, or IMTS. (references)
Letter frequencies The frequency of letters in text messages has often been studied for use in cryptography, and frequency analysis in particular. An exact analysis of this is not possible, as each person writes slightly differently; however, an approximate ordering of English letters by frequency of use is ETAOIN SHRDL UCMFG YPWBV KXJQZ. (references)
North American broadcast television frequencies The FM audio carrier is always 4.5MHz above the VSB video carrier, and the total channel bandwidth is 6MHz. The lower channel boundary is 1.25MHz lower than the video carrier's center frequency, the upper is 4.75MHz above. (See NTSC for more details.) Analog stations must be separated by at least one channel, except where a gap already exists (such as between channels 4/5, 6/7, and 13/14. Digital channels can operate adjacent channel to any station, which is the only reason so many channels could be removed from service for DTV. (references)
Piano key frequencies This is a virtual piano with 88 keys tuned to A440, showing the frequencies, in cycles per second (Hz), of each note. This distribution of frequencies is known as equal temperament, i.e. each successive pitch is derived by multiplying the previous by the twelfth root of two. For other tuning schemes refer to Musical tuning. (references)
Remote control frequencies Remote Control Frequencies, or RCF for short, is a Chicago-based amoebic musical project started by sound artist R-Rock. Blending together genres including hip-hop,psychedelic rock, drum and bass and electronica, these sounds are then combined with samples, vocals, instruments, recorded and improvised noise, gadgets and concepts to form new sound potential. (references)
Television channel frequencies The following tables show the frequencies assigned to broadcast television channels in various regions of the world, along with the ITU letter designator for the system used. The frequencies shown are for the video and audio carriers. The channel itself occupies several megahertz of bandwidth. For example, North American channel 2 occupies the spectrum from 54 to 60 MHz. See Broadcast television system for a table of signal characteristics, including bandwidth, by ITU letter designator. (references)

Expressions Domain Definition
Audio frequencies Space Frequencies that the human ear can hear (usually 30 to 20,000 cycles per second). (references)
Expected cell frequencies Statistics For nominal (categorical) data in which the count of items in each category has been tabulated, the observed frequency is the actual count, and the expected frequency is the count predicted by the theoretical distribution underlying the data. Source: European Union. (references)
Expected frequencies Statistics In contingency table problems, the expected frequencies are the frequencies that you would predict(expect)in each cell of the table, if you knew only the row and column totals, and if you assumed that the variables under comparison were independent. Source: European Union. (references)
Guarded frequencies Military (DOD) Enemy frequencies that are currently being exploited for combat information and intelligence. A guarded frequency is time-oriented in that the guarded frequency list changes as the enemy assumes different combat postures. These frequencies may be jammed after the commander has weighed the potential operational gain against the loss of the technical information. See also electronic warfare. (references)
High frequencies Electrical Engineering The radio frequencies in the band between 3 and 30 MHz. Source: European Union. (references)
Microwave frequencies Post & Telecom Frequencies of microwaves. Source: European Union. (references)
MPEG-2 Low Sampling Frequencies Extention Computing (MPEG-2 LSF) An extension of MPEG-2, mostly used with MPEG-2 audio layer 3 because the aim was medium quality at low bit rates, not lower sampling frequencies. (2001-12-04). Source: The Free On-line Dictionary of Computing..
Protected frequencies Military (DOD) Those friendly frequencies used for a particular operation, identified and protected to prevent them from being inadvertently jammed by friendly forces while active electronic warfare operations are directed against hostile forces. These frequencies are of such critical importance that jamming should be restricted unless absolutely necessary or until coordination with the using unit is made. They are generally time-oriented, may change with the tactical situation, and must be updated periodically. See also electronic warfare. (references)
Side frequencies Post & Telecom Carrier plus or minus audio frequency. Source: European Union. (references)
TABOO frequencies Military (DOD) Any friendly frequency of such importance that it must never be deliberately jammed or interfered with by friendly forces. Normally, these frequencies include international distress, CEASE BUZZER, safety, and controller frequencies. These frequencies are generally long standing. However, they may be time-oriented in that, as the combat or exercise situation changes, the restrictions may be removed. See also CEASE BUZZER; electronic warfare. (references)
Theoretical frequencies Statistics The frequencies which would fall into assigned ranges of the variate if some theoretical distribution law were followed, as distinct from the actual frequencies which may be observed in a sample. Source: European Union. (references)
