Orbital forcing Orbital forcing, or Milankovitch theory, describes the effect on climate of slow changes in the tilt of the Earth's axis and shape of the orbit. These orbital changes change the total amount of sunlight reaching the Earth by up to 25% at mid-latitudes (from 400 to 500 watts per cubic meter at latitudes of 60 degrees). In this context, the term "forcing" signifies a physical process that affects the Earth's climate. (references)
Radiative forcing The generalised concept of radiative forcing in climate science is any change in the radiation (heat) entering the climate system or changes in radiatively active gases. It also has a more specific technical definition - see "ipcc usage" section. (references)

Specialty Expressions: FORCING

Expressions Domain Definition
Climate forcing Aerospace A change imposed on the climate system that alters the exchange of energy between the planet and outer space, with one very noticeable effect being a possible alteration in the surface temperature. Examples of climate forcings include changes in the amount of incoming solar radiation -- sunlight -- and changes in the amounts of radiatively active gases such as carbon dioxide, CO in the atmosphere. (references)
Cloud forcing Science The difference between the radiation budget components for average cloud conditions and cloud-free conditions. Roughly speaking, clouds increase the albedo from 15 to 30%, which results in a reduction of absorbed solar radiation of about 50 W/m^2. This cooling is offset somewhat by the greenhouse effect of clouds which reduces the OLR by about 30 W/m^2, so the net cloud forcing of the radiation budget is a loss of about 20 W/m^2. Were the clouds to be removed with all else remaining the same, the Earth would gain this last amount in net radiation and begin to warm up. (references)
External forcing Science Influence on the Earth system (or one of its components) by an external agent such as solar radiation or the impact of extraterrestrial bodies such as meteorites. (references)
Forcing fan Mining A fan which blows or forces the intake air into the mine workings, as opposed to an exhaust fan. A mine exhaust fan may become a forcing fan (with reduced efficiency) when the ventilation is reversed in anemergency. (references)
Forcing function Aerospace Vibration or alternating stress that imposes an oscillation on a system. (references)
Forcing house Food & Agriculture A heated greenhouse where the rate of development of plants can be increased by warmth. Source: European Union. (references)
Forcing lift Mining Scot. A set of pumps raising water by a plunger; a ram pump. Also called forcing set. (references)
Forcing Mechanism Weather A process that alters the energy balance of the climate system, i.e. changes the relative balance between incoming solar radiation and outgoing infrared radiation from Earth. Such mechanisms include changes in solar irradiance, volcanic eruptions, and enhancement of the natural greenhouse effect by emission of carbon dioxide. See radiation, infrared radiation, radiative forcing. (references)
Forcing set Mining A pump for forcing water to a higher level or to the surface. (references)
Orbital forcing Geophysics Theory that proposes large scale climate changes are due in part to the variations in precession, eccentricity and obliquity that affects the amount of solar radiation received by the earth. (references)
Radiative forcing Energy 1: A change in average net radiation at the top of the troposphere (known as the tropopause) because of a change in either incoming solar or exiting infrared radiation. A positive radiative forcing tends on average to warm the earth's surface; a negative radiative forcing on average tends to cool the earth's surface. Greenhouse gases, when emitted into the atmosphere, trap infrared energy radiated from the earth's surface and therefore tend to produce positive radiative forcing. Also see Greenhouse gases. (references)
2: The extent to which injecting a unit of a greenhouse gas into the atmosphere raises global average temperature. (references)
Radiative forcing Weather A change in the balance between incoming solar radiation and outgoing infrared radiation. Without any radiative forcing, solar radiation coming to the Earth would continue to be approximately equal to the infrared radiation emitted from the Earth. The addition of greenhouse gases traps an increased fraction of the infrared radiation, radiating it back toward the surface and creating a warming influence (i.e., positive radiative forcing because incoming solar radiation will exceed outgoing infrared radiation).
