Expressions Definition
Fon (Cameroon) A fon is a chieftain or king of a region of Cameroon, especially among the Tikar and Bamileke peoples of the Bamenda grassfields (the Northwest and West provinces). Though once independent rulers, most fons were brought under the German rule or military subjugation during the colonial period. Following the defeat of the Germans in World War I, the fons came under British or French rule, depending on whether their territory fell into British Cameroon or French Cameroon. Since Cameroon's independence in 1961, the fons are under the jurisdiction of the Government of Cameroon. However, they maintain semi-autonomous union councils and jurisdiction over their hereditary land. (references)
Fon language Fon (native name Fɔngbe) is part of the Gbe language cluster and belongs to the Kwa sub-family of the Niger-Congo languages. Fon is spoken mainly in Benin by approximately 1.7 million speakers. Like the other Gbe languages, Fon is an isolating language with an SVO basic word order. (references)
Fon of Bafut The Fon of Bafut is the fon or Mfor (ruler) of the village of Bafut and its adjoining areas in the Northwest Province, Cameroon. Presently, the Fon of Bafut is still a local ruler, but under jurisdiction from the Government of Cameroon, and a board of Fons. Bafut is the largest of Cameroon's three provinces. (references)
Fon people Fon is a major West African ethnic and linguistic group in the country of Benin or Dahomey, and southwest Nigeria, made up of more than 2,000,000 people. The Fon language is the main language spoken in Southern Benin, and is a member of the Gbe language group. Closely related cultures include the Ewe, Aja and Guin peoples. The Fon are said to originate from Tado, a village in south east Togo, near the border with Benin. (references)
