Extended Definition: FER

Fer

Fer is a red wine grape that is grown primarily in southwest France and is most notable for its role in Madiran, Gaillac, and Aveyron wines. In Béarn, the grape is commonly used in local wines under the name Pinenc. The vine is noted for its hard wood and difficulty in pruning. The French grape is not related to the Malbec clone of the same name that is commonly planted in Argentina.

Wine made from the Fer grape is characterized by its perfumed currant, soft tannins, and concentration in fruit.
