Lotus Europa The Series 1 or S1 Europa (also known as Lotus Type 46) was announced for sale to European markets on December 20, 1966. The first cars were delivered to France in February 1967. The S1 was fitted with a modified Renault 16 1470 cc engine and a 4-speed gearbox. The engine was a special 82 hp (61.1 kW) version (as opposed to the 52 hp (38.8 kW) generated in standard form), and Lotus mounted it at a 90° angle to accommodate the Europa's unique layout. The S1 weighed 686 kg (1512.4 lb), had a top speed of 110 mph, and did 0-60 mph in 9.5 s. Including the S1A variation (which incorporated some of the S2 changes), there were 650 Europa S1s were produced. (references)
M/S Silja Europa The M/S Silja Europa, operated by Silja Line, is one of the largest RORO-type car/passenger ferries in the world. It was originally built at Meyer Werft in Papenburg, Germany for the ferry operator Rederi Ab Slite, a part of Viking Line. The ferry was already painted in Viking Line's colors and almost ready to be handed over, when the Swedish krona was devaluated by 10%, which led Slite into economical difficulties. Slite could not pay for the ship so Meyer Werft kept it and soon managed to charter it to Viking Line's rival, Silja Line. It was put on the Helsinki—Stockholm route, replacing M/S Silja Serenade which was put to the Turku—Mariehamn—Stockholm route, but Europa and Serenade had to exchange routes soon as Serenade had troubles navigating in the Turku archipelago. Picos de Europa The Picos de Europa is a range of mountains some 20 km inland from the northern coast of Spain. It consists of three major massifs - Central, Eastern and Western (also known as the Picos de Cornión). The Central and Western massifs are separated by the mile-deep (1.5 km deep) Cares Gorge (Garganta del Cares), with the village of Caïn at its head. The waters in the Cares mostly arise from cave resurgences. Much of the water in the Cares river has been diverted into a hydroelectric scheme, with a closed canal running in the northern wall of the gorge to Carmamena.
