Equus Octōber Antiquities Equus Octōber. See Palilia. (references)
Equus Tutĭcus Antiquities Equus Tutĭcus. A town of Samnium, on the Appian Way, distant, according to the itineraries, twenty-two Roman miles from Cluvia, which is itself ten miles northeast of Beneventum. The term Tuticus is Oscan, equivalent to the Latin magnus. Much discussion has arisen among geographers as to the precise situation of this place. The branch of the Appian Way on which Equus Tuticus stood runs nearly parallel with that which Horace seems to have followed in his well-known journey to Brundisium. Horace, in speaking (according to the scholiasts) of Equus Tuticus, alludes to the unmanageable nature of the name in verse, Mansuri oppidulo, quod versu dicere non est (Sat.i. 5 Sat., 87). Modern scholars do not think Equus Tuticus to have been the town in question, but it was certainly on the road from Rome to Brundisium (Ad Att. vi. 1. 1), and no more likely place has been suggested as the one that Horace had in mind. See Palmer ad loc. (references)
Funālis Equus Antiquities Funālis Equus (paraseiros, seiraphoros). An outrigger to a chariot drawn by horses abreast of each other (Theb. vi. 462). When the chariot had four horses attached, two outriggers were added, one on each side of the yoke-horses (iugales), and called respectively dexter and sinister (Suet. Tib. 6). The name funarius is also used. See Isidor. Orig. xviii. 35. (references)
Funarius Equus Antiquities Funarius Equus. See Funalis Equus. (references)
Octōber Equus Antiquities Octōber Equus. A Roman rite originally held in honor of Mars. On the Ides of October in each year there was held a race of two-horse chariots (bigae) in the Campus Martius, after which the off-horse of the winning chariot was sacrificed by the Flamen Martialis. The tail was cut off (Arnob. vii. 24), and taken to the Regia, while the blood from it was sprinkled on the hearth of Vesta. The inhabitants of the Via Sacra and the Subura had a rough-and-tumble fight for the possession of the head. This contest was symbolical of the rivalry between the two halves of the older city. See Mommsen, Hist. of Rome, i. 53; Burn, Rome and the Campagna, p. 38; and Marquardt, Staatsverwaltung, iii. 334 foll. (references)
