Ekman Dredge Administration A dredge that has opposable jaws operated by a messenger traveling down a cable to release a spring catch and that is used in ecology for sampling the bottom of a body of water. (references)
Ekman layer Aerospace The layer of transition between the surface boundary layer, where shearing stress is constant, and the free atmosphere, where the atmosphere is treated as an ideal fluid in approximate geostrophic equilibrium. Also called spiral layer. In Ekman's analysis (see Ekman spiral), the coefficient of eddy viscosity is assumed constant within this layer; subsequent calculations have relaxed this assumption. (references)
Ekman spiral Aerospace As used in meteorology, an idealized mathematical description of the wind distribution in the planetary boundary layer of the atmosphere, within which the earth's surface has an appreciable effect on the air motion. The model is simplified by assuming that within this layer eddy viscosity and density are constant, the motion is horizontal and steady, the isobars are straight and parallel, and the geostrophic wind is constant with height.
