Specialty Definition: Egeria

Domain Definition
Antiquities Egeria. A Roman goddess of fountains, who was also a goddess of birth, and possessed the gift of prophecy. It was from her fountain, in the sacred enclosure of the Camenae, before the Porta Capena in Rome, that the Vestal Virgins brought the water necessary for the baths and purifications of their office. There was another fountain of Egeria in the precincts of Diana at Aricia. In Roman legend, Egeria was the consort and counselor of King Numa, who used to meet her in a grotto in the precincts of the Camenae. After the death of her lover she fled to the shrine of the Arician Diana, by whom, as her wailings disturbed the worship, she was changed into the fountain which bore her name. Married women worshipped her at Rome as a goddess of childbirth. (references)

Egeria (mythology) In Roman mythology, the water nymph Egeria ("of the black poplar") was associated with Diana, presiding over childbirth (for her aid, like Ilithyia's, was invoked by women in labor), and sharing her wisdom and prophecy for simple libations of water or milk. She had a sacred grove near where the Baths of Caracalla were erected in the 3rd century. Egeria was one of the Camenae, minor deities who were superseded by the Muses as Rome fell under the cultural hegemony of Greece; so Dionysius of Halicarnassus listed her among the Muses (ii. 6o). Egeria seems to predate Roman myth, however, and to have been of Etruscan origins, for she was a nymph consort to the Sabine Numa Pompilius, second king of Rome, whom she would meet in her sacred grove and whom she taught matters relating to being a wise and just king (Livy i. 19). Egeria (nun) In early Chistian history, Egeria, also known as Aetheria, is the name of a nun who made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land about 381 - 384, taking about four years to do it, and who wrote a long letter to her beloved community of nuns at home (somewhere not far from the Rhône River) describing her travels. The middle part of Egeria's writing survived and was copied in the Codex Aretinus, which was written at Monte Cassino in the eleventh century, while the beginning and end are lost. But in the 7th century a monk named Valerius wrote a praise about Egeria that gives us a sketch of the rest. Egeria wrote down her observations in a book called Itinerarium Egeriae, or the Travels. This Codex Aretinus was discovered in 1884 by the Italian scholar Gian-Francesco Gamurrini, who found the manuscript in a monastic library in Arezzo. Egeria describes the monks, many holy places and geographical points in her travels and even the early details of the liturgical practices of the church at Jerusalem. (references)
