Egbert Phelps Egbert Phelps is an honorary member and assistant to the founders of Theta Chi Fraternity. He was born on December 8 1835 in Middlebury, Vermont. He entered Norwich University in 1852 but transferred to Union College in 1854 where he became a member of Chi Psi Fraternity and Phi Beta Kappa. Union College is often referred to as the "mother of fraternities" with six national fraternities founded on the campus, including Chi Psi in 1841. Phelps continued his interest in Theta Chi even after he transferred from Norwich. While at Union, Phelps suggested the name for Theta Chi and the design of the badge to former classmates Freeman and Chase. (references)
Saint Egbert Saint Egbert (died 729) was a novice in the Benedictine monastery of Lindisfarne in Northumbria in Anglo-Saxon England. As a youth Egbert travelled to Ireland himself in search of learning (as Ireland, at that time, had a better preserved literate tradition) and settled at the monastery of Rathelmigisi (Rathmelsigi), according to Bede, identified with Mellifont in County Louth or else in Connaught. When his Northumbrian travelling companion Æthelhun died of the plague and he contracted it, too, he promised God that he would never return to England, if his life were spared, but spend his life in exile. He survived, and never returned to Northumbria. (references)
