Common Expressions: EXTERNALISM

Expressions Definition
Semantic externalism Semantic externalism is the view that the meaning of a word, or the content of a concept, depends in some way on the things it the wold to which the word refers (its extension). It is famously motivated by the Twin Earth thought experiment due to Hilary Putnam. Twin Earth is an exact duplicate of Earth, except that what they call 'water' is not H2O but some other stuff, XYZ. Imagine someone on Earth - Oscar - who has no knowledge or interest in the chemical structure of water. There will be someone on Twin Earth - Toscar - who is exactly identical to Oscar. Not only is Toscar physically identical (molecule-for-molecule), he is functionally identical. He has all the same beliefs and desires as Oscar, and operates in exactly the same way. (references)
