EXtensible Markup LanguageComputingA system for defining specialized markup languages that are used to transmit formatted data. It is conceptually related to HTML, but it is not itself a markup language, being rather a metalanguage. Source: European Union. (references)
Extensible Markup LanguageComputingExtensible Markup Language (XML) An initiative from the W3C defining an "extremely simple" dialect of SGML suitable for use on the World-Wide Web. (http://www.w3.org/XML/). [Relationship to the XSL forthcoming subset of DSSSL?] (1997-11-20). Source: The Free On-line Dictionary of Computing..
Extensible Markup Language (XML)ArtA subset of the SGML language in which tags, similar to those used in HTML, define the kind of information contained in a data element (i.e., product number, price, etc.), rather than how it is displayed. "Extensible" means that in XML tags are not limited and predefined as they are in HTML, but must be created and defined by the person producing the Web page. XML can be used with HTML in the same Web document. The most elaborate XML vocabularies are those developed to support business-to-business transactions. (references)
Extensible Markup Language (XML)MilitaryA specification developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) especially for web documents. It allows designers to create their own customized tags, enabling the definition, transmission, validation, and interpretation of data between applications and between organizations. These customized tags can provide functionality not available with HTML. For example, XML supports links that point to multiple documents, as opposed to HTML links, which can reference just one destination each. (references)
