| Excel Education Centers, Inc. | Excel Education Centers, Inc. is a charter school in Arizona with several campuses. Michael Gerdes is the founder and C.E.O. Most work is done on computers through a program called ALS, which covers classes such as Science, Social Studies, and some math and english. There are to regular basic Math and English classes. These classes use "modules", which are lessons which are to be completed, then turned in. After 7 modules, its 1/2 credit. To graduate this High School you need 21.5 credits. Grade Levels 9-12 only. Must complete a class required for Graduation called Service Learning. Service Learning, is a class which requires students to donate 50 hours to community service for .5 credit. There are about 10-15 students in each class, much less than most high schools. Excel's in-school hours are Mon-Thurs. There are different time sessions,5 hours each, that work with the students schedules in some campuses. An example would be 8AM-1PM, 10AM-3PM, 2-7PM. Excel's senior year is based on a lot of college apps, and college prep. They call these schools year-round schools, but aren't actually in session year round. Due to the fact students have fridays off, and only go 5 hours a day, the summer is cut short. Most High Schools get about 3 months, Excel gets about 1.5-2 month summer vacation. A lot of the students at Excel Education Centers need this schedule due to work, family and sometimes they have children that they need to care for. The main goal for students is, come in to school, sit down, and work. There is an absence of "cliques"..Jocks, Cheerleaders and so on and so forth, so the goal is go, work, graduate, move on. There is a freshman, sophomore, junior and senior year, but its move at your own pace, so if students come in, don't mess around, don't socialize, they could graduate in 2 years. (references) | ||
