Specialty Definition: ETHANOLAMINE

Domain Definition
Health A viscous, hygroscopic amino alcohol with an ammoniacal odor. It is widely distributed in biological tissue and is a component of lecithin. It is used as a surfactant, fluorimetric reagent, and to remove CO2 and H2S from natural gas and other gases. (references)
Wikipedic Ethanolamine, also called 2-Aminoethanol or Monoethanolamine (often abbreviated as MEA), is an organic chemical compound which is both a primary amine (due to an amino group in its molecule) and an alcohol (due to a hydroxyl group). Like other amines, monoethanolamine acts as a weak base. Ethanolamine is a toxic flammable corrosive colorless viscous liquid with an odor similar to ammonia. It has structural formula (CH2)2OHNH2 and CAS number 141-43-5. Ethanolamine is manufactured by reacting ethylene oxide with ammonia. (references)
