| Noah Webster | 1: [Noun] A current of water running back, or in a direction contrary to the main stream. Thus a point of land extending into a river, checks the water near the shore, and turns it back or gives it a circular course. The word is applied also to the air or wind moving in a circular direction.. | 2: [Noun] A whirlpool; a current of water or air in a circular direction. And smiling eddies dimpled on the main. Wheel through the air, in circling eddies play.. | 3: [Verb] To move circularly, or as an eddy.. Source: Webster's 1828 American Dictionary. |

| Aerospace | 1: A rotating water current that runs contrary to the main current. Eddies can average up to a few hundred kilometers in diameter, contain up to 5,000 cubic kilometers of water, and last several years. They can be cyclonic or anticyclonic, and their rotation is determined by the Coriolis force. (See also gyre). | Wikipedic | In fluid dynamics, an eddy is the swirling of a fluid and the reverse current created when the fluid flows past an obstacle. The moving fluid creates a space devoid of downstream-flowing water on the downstream side of the object. Fluid behind the obstacle flows into the void creating a swirl of fluid on each edge of the obstacle, followed by a short reverse flow of fluid behind the obstacle flowing upstream, toward the back of the obstacle. This phenomenon is most visible behind large emergent rocks in swift-flowing rivers. (references) | ||

Even though he's 14, he wears a size 5 shoe (however he really has a foot big enough to fit size 2). His suitable birthday is February 11, 1991. Edd's parents leave him sticky notes carrying messages to do numbers of chores. He is a germaphobe, and much to his dismay, his friend, Ed, has 0% personal hygiene. | Eddy current | An eddy current is a phenomenon caused by a moving magnetic field intersecting a conductor or vice-versa. The relative motion causes a circulating flow of electrons or current within the conductor. These circulating eddies of current create electromagnets with magnetic fields that oppose the change in the external magnetic field (see Lenz's law). The stronger the magnetic field, or greater the electrical conductivity of the conductor, the greater the currents developed and the greater the opposing force. This is used to great effect in movement to electricity converters such as electrical generators and dynamic microphones. Friction within the conductor, or resistance, cause a dragging effect that has been used for braking and damping. Superconductors allow perfect, lossless conduction which creates eddy currents that entirely cancel the external magnetic field, allowing magnetic levitation. Eddy currents are also the root cause of skin effect in conductors carrying AC current. (references) | ||
