| Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology |
The Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology is a graduate school and institute under the University of Kent, started in 1989 and named in honour of the famous British naturalist Gerald Durrell. It is the first school in the United Kingdom to award degrees and diplomas in the fields of Conservation, Eco-tourism, Biodiversity Management and Ethnobotany. The institute awards diplomas to graduates of the International Training Centre for captive breeding and zoo specialists at the Jersey Zoological Park, founded in 1978 by Gerald Durrell. Louisa Fletcher Durrell (nee Dixie) was the mother of novelist Lawrence Durrell and naturalist Gerald Durrell. She was born in Roorkee in 1886 where she met and married her husband Lawrence Samuel Durrell, an engineer by profession. Together, they travelled all over India on account of Lawrence Samuel Durrell's engineering work. She had four surviving children - the eldest Lawrence, Margaret, Leslie and Gerald. She was actively interested in spiritualism and cookery, and would freely mingle with Indians to learn of local spirits and cuisine, not conforming to the views of segregation of her time.
