Mining A self-contained electronic system that makes use of Doppler's principle of frequency shift of waves emanating from a moving source. In this system, a pulsed or continuous wave is sent diagonally downward fore and aft, forward and backward, and the frequencies are compared in order to obtain the true ground speed. The heading is obtained from a special magnetic compass and is maintained by a directional gyro used as an integrating device. The distance thus determined has a precision better than one part in a thousand, which is sufficient for most geophysical surveys. (references)

Doppler broadening In Atomic physics, Doppler broadening is the broadening of spectral lines due to the Doppler effect in which the thermal movement of atoms or molecules shifts the apparent frequency of each emitter. The many different velocities of the emitting gas results in many small shifts, the cumulative effect of which is to broaden the line. The broadening is dependent only on the wavelength of the line, the mass of the emitting particle and the temperature, and can therefore be a very useful method for measuring the temperature of an emitting gas. False Doppler False Doppler is a term invented by Eric Baird (a Wikipedia contributor) based on a misunderstanding of a comment appearing in an essay written by Oliver Lodge in 1909. It refers to the actual Doppler effect that occurs when the distance between emitter and receiver is increasing but the incoming signal is perpendicular to the receiver's path with respect to the receiver's rest frame. The term is not used anywhere except in this Wikipedia article. (references)
Inverse Doppler effect While the usual Doppler effect means that the frequency increases if the observer approaches the source - and decreases as they move away from each other - the theorists have speculated, since 1943, about the possibility that these rules may be interchanged. Laser Doppler velocimetry Laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV, also known as laser Doppler anemometry, or LDA) is a technique for measuring the direction and speed of fluids like air and water. In its simplest form, LDV crosses two beams of collimated, monochromatic light in the flow of the fluid being measured. A microscopic pattern of bright and dark stripes forms in the intersection volume. Small particles in the flow pass through this pattern and reflect light towards a detector, with a characteristic frequency indicating the velocity of the particle passing through the probe volume. Doppler broadening Aerospace The broadening of either an emission line or an absorption line due to random motions of molecules of the gas that is emitting or absorbing the radiant energy. See pressure broadening. In the case of an emitting gas, for example, those molecules which are approaching the observer as they emit quanta of radiant energy will, because of the Doppler effect, appear to send out a train of waves of slightly shorter wavelength than that characteristic of a stationary molecule, while receding molecules will appear to emit slightly longer wavelengths. The net effect, averaged over many molecules, is to superimpose, on the natural line width, a bell-shaped broadening that is proportional to the square root of the absolute temperature of the gas. If, on the other hand, the source is at rest relative to the propagating medium while the observer moves with speed v relative to the source, f ' = f '[1� (v/c)]where the positive sign now refers to the case of observer approaching the source. For electromagnetic radiation, f/f ' = [1 (v/c)]/[1 � (v/c)] where the top signs represent the source receding from the observer and the bottom signs, approaching the observer. (references)
