Satire DECALOGUE, n. A series of commandments, ten in number -- just enough to permit an intelligent selection for observance, but not enough to embarrass the choice. Following is the revised edition of the Decalogue, calculated for this meridian. Thou shalt no God but me adore: 'Twere too expensive to have more. No images nor idols make For Robert Ingersoll to break. Take not God's name in vain; select A time when it will have effect. Work not on Sabbath days at all, But go to see the teams play ball. Honor thy parents. That creates For life insurance lower rates. Kill not, abet not those who kill; Thou shalt not pay thy butcher's bill. Kiss not thy neighbor's wife, unless Thine own thy neighbor doth caress Don't steal; thou'lt never thus compete Successfully in business. Cheat. Bear not false witness -- that is low -- But "hear 'tis rumored so and so." Cover thou naught that thou hast not By hook or crook, or somehow, got. G.J. Source: Devil's Dictionary
Noah Webster [Noun] dec'alog. The ten commandments or precepts given by God to Moses at mount Sinai, and originally written on two tables of stone.. Source: Webster's 1828 American Dictionary.
Bible Decalogue the name given by the Greek fathers to the ten commandments; "the ten words," as the original is more literally rendered (Ex. 20:3-17). These commandments were at first written on two stone slabs (31:18), which were broken by Moses throwing them down on the ground (32:19). They were written by God a second time (34:1). The decalogue is alluded to in the New Testament five times (Matt. 5:17, 18, 19; Mark 10:19; Luke 18:20; Rom. 7:7, 8; 13:9; 1 Tim. 1:9, 10). These commandments have been divided since the days of Origen the Greek father, as they stand in the Confession of all the Reformed Churches except the Lutheran. The division adopted by Luther, and which has ever since been received in the Lutheran Church, makes the first two commandments one, and the third the second, and so on to the last, which is divided into two. "Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house" being ranked as ninth, and "Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife," etc., the tenth. (See COMMANDMENTS.). Source: Easton's 1897 Bible Dictionary.

Common Expressions: Decalogue

Expressions Definition
Los Lunas Decalogue Stone The Los Lunas Decalogue Stone bears a very regular inscription that is read by its partisans as an abridged version of the Decalogue or Ten Commandments, carved into the flat face of a large boulder on the side of Hidden Mountain, near Los Lunas, New Mexico, about 35 miles south of Albuquerque. The language, according to some, is Hebrew, and moreover the script is Paleo-Hebrew— with a few Greek letters mixed in. The tetragrammaton YHWH, or "Yahweh," makes four appearances. (references)
Ritual Decalogue The Ritual Decalogue is one of the two very different lists of ten commandments within the torah which is known as the ten commandments (the name decalogue (δέκα λόγοι) merely means ten sayings). The Ritual decalogue is the list of commandments appearing at Exodus 34. As they concern points of ritual, rather than ethics, they are viewed as having a minor significance compared to the Ethical Decalogue. Consequently, although the ritual decalogue appears in the text at the point at which God directly inscribes a decalogue of commandments onto two tablets, it is still the ethical decalogue which is usually believed to be the one which was inscribed on the tablets at this moment, even though the text does not at this point even mention the Ethical Decalogue. The Decalogue Dekalog (The Decalogue) (1988) is a Polish film series, originally made as a television miniseries, directed by Krzysztof Kieślowski and co-written by Kieślowski with Krzysztof Piesiewicz, with music by Zbigniew Preisner. It consists of ten one-hour films, each of which represents one of the Ten Commandments and explores possible meanings of the commandment—often ambiguous or contradictory—within a fictional story set in modern Poland. The series is Kieślowski's most acclaimed work and has won numerous international awards, though it was not widely released outside Europe until the late 1990s. Filmmaker Stanley Kubrick described it as the only masterpiece he could name in his lifetime. (references)
