Debs Tendency The Debs Tendency (DT) is a left-wing political tendency in the Socialist Party USA (SPUSA). The primary goal of the DT is the development of the SPUSA as a revolutionary democratic socialist political party of the working class. The mission of such a party would be the defeat of capitalism and capitalist rule, the establishment of a democratic workers' republic, the abolition of the old system, which rests on class antagonism and minority rule, and the foundation of a new society without classes and without the tyranny of capitalist private property. Debs v. United States Evidence against Debs was a document entitled Anti-War Proclamation and Program showing that Debs's original intent was to openly protest against the war. The argument of the Federal Government was that Debs was attempting to arouse mutiny and treason by preventing the drafting of soldiers into the United states Army. This sort of sentiment and speech was outlawed in United States with the Espionage Act of June 15, 1917. The argument in favor of Debs is that he was entitled to the rights of free speech provided for in the first amendment of the Bill of Rights. (references)
