Extended Definition: DUNT

Dunt

Dunting is a fault that can occur during the firing of ceramic articles. It is the "cracking that occurs in fired ceramic bodies as a result of a thermally induced stress"[1] and is caused by a "ware cooled too quickly after it has been fired".[2]

Dunting of ceramics is defined as the cracking of the claybody, as opposed to crazing, which is the crackling of a glaze. It results from cooling the ware too quickly past the temperatures at which silica undergoes a shift in crystalline structure during firing.
