Expressions Definition
Boltzmann (crater) Boltzmann is an old lunar crater that is located along the southern limb of the Moon, in the vicinity of the south pole. At this location the crater is viewed from the side from Earth, and so not much detail can be seen. It is located to the north of the Drygalski walled-plain, and to the east of the Le Gentil crater. Boltzmann distribution law (physics) a law expressing the distribution of energy among the molecules of a gas in thermal equilibrium. Source: Wordnet 3.0 Copyright © 2006 by Princeton University. All rights reserved.
Boltzmann equation The Boltzmann equation, devised by Ludwig Boltzmann, describes the statistical distribution of particles in a fluid. It is one of the most important equations of non-equilibrium statistical mechanics, the area of statistical mechanics that deals with systems far from thermodynamic equilibrium; for instance, when there is an applied temperature gradient or electric field. The Boltzmann equation is used to study how a fluid transports physical quantities such as heat and charge, and thus to derive transport properties such as electrical conductivity, Hall conductivity, viscosity, and thermal conductivity. Boltzmann machine A Boltzmann machine is a type of stochastic recurrent neural network originally invented by Geoffrey Hinton and Terry Sejnowski. Boltzmann machines can be seen as the stochastic, generative counterpart of Hopfield nets. They were an early example of neural networks capable of forming internal representations. Because they are very slow to simulate they are not very useful for most practical purposes. However, they are theoretically intriguing due to the biological plausibility of their training algorithm. Specialty Expressions: Boltzmann

Expressions Domain Definition
Boltzmann constant Aerospace The ratio of the universal gas constant to Avogadro number; equal to 1.38054 x 10-16 erg/K. Sometimes called gas constant per molecule, Boltzmann universal conversion factor. Symbol k. (references)
Boltzmann constant Electrical Engineering The number k that relates the average energy of a molecule to the absolute temperature of the environment. Source: European Union. (references)
Boltzmann constant Physics K = 1.38 x 10^-16 erg/degree. This is the ratio of the universal gas constant to Avogadro's number. It is also used to relate temperatures (Kelvin) to energies (ergs or Joules) via E = (constant of order unity) * kT. (references)
Boltzmann constant; k Physics A constant which describes the relationship between temperature and kinetic energy for molecules in an ideal gas. It is equal to 1.380622 10-23 J/K (see scientific notation). (L. Boltzmann). (references)
Boltzmann Distribution Physics See Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution; distribution function. (references)
Boltzmann equation Mathematics The algebraic equation stating that the entropy of a system of particles is proportional to the Napierian logarithm of the probability of its macroscopic state (Elsevier's dictionary of nuclear science and technology). Source: European Union. (references)
Boltzmann Equation Physics Fundamental equation in kinetic theory which describes the evolution of the distribution function. (See also Vlasov equation.) The actual equation is given in most texts covering plasma kinetic theory. (references)
Boltzmann factor Electrical Engineering A statistical distribution-density factor relevant to semiconductor materials of a definite non-degenerate nature. Source: European Union. (references)
Boltzmann machine Computing PDP paradigm based on a thermodynamic model; the activation value is a stochastic function of the inputs and of a parameter, called "temperature"; the temperature determines the range of uncertainty as to whether units will turn on or turn off. This PDP model allows to escape from the local minima problem. Source: European Union. (references)
Boltzmann maximum likelihood model Computing Combination of weights in a network that is most likely to have produced the observed ensemble of environmental vectors. Source: European Union. (references)
Boltzmann relation Electrical Engineering The equation stating that, apart from an additive constant, the entropy of a system of particles is equal to the product of the Napierian, or natural, logarithm of the probability of its macroscopic state and the Boltzmann constant. Source: European Union. (references)
Boltzmann relations Electrical Engineering The relations between hole and free-electron densities and potential and temperature. Source: European Union. (references)
Boltzmann superposition Aerospace Overlaying of a series of step functions to find the gross response to a time-varying input. (references)
Boltzmann universal conversion factor Aerospace = Boltzmann constant. (references)
