| Geological | Tephra is the general term now used by volcanologists for airborne volcanic ejecta of any size. Historically, however, various terms have been used to describe ejecta of different sizes. Fragments larger than about 2.5 inches are called blocks if they were ejected in a solid state and volcanic bombs if ejected in semi-solid, or plastic, condition. (Tilling, Heliker, and Wright, 1987)* Fragments of lava or rock larger than 64 millimeters in size that are blasted into the air by volcanic explosions. (Miller, 1989)* See: Tephra. (references) | ||

| Geophysics | A solid rock fragment greater than 64 mm in diameter ejected from a volcano during an explosive eruption. Blocks commonly consist of solidified pieces of old lava flows that were part of a volcano's cone. (references) | ||

| Statistics | Matching, also known as pairing (with two samples) and blocking (with multiple samples) involves matching up individuals in the samples so as to minimize their dissimilarity except in the factor (s) under study. For example, in pre-test/post-test studies, each subject is paired (matched) with himself, so that the difference between the pre-test and post-test responses can be attributed to the change caused by taking the test, and not to differences between the individuals taking the test. A study involving animals might be blocked by matching up animals from the same litter or from the same cage. The goal is to minimize the variation within the pairs or blocks while maximizing the variation between them. This will minimize variation between subjects that is not attributable to the factors under study by attributing it to the blocking factor. The matched items in a pair or in a block are related by their membership in that pair or block. Other methods for controlling for variation between subjects for variables that are not of direct interest are stratification and the use of covariates. Source: European Union. (references) | ||

| 16 Blocks | 16 Blocks is a 2006 film directed by Richard Donner and based on the story of an aging, bitter NYPD police officer (Bruce Willis) who is asked to escort a happy-go-lucky criminal witness (Mos Def) through sixteen blocks of Lower Manhattan from the police station to a courthouse. No one seems to want the pair to reach their destination, and they are faced with difficult situations at every turn as they make their way through the Big Apple. The film is currently in production and much of the movie is being filmed on location in New York City (though in some scenes Toronto fills in for the city due to tax advantages and budget constraints). | Blocks world | The blocks world is one of the most famous planning domains in artificial intelligence. Imagine a set of cubes (blocks) sitting on a table. The goal is to build one or more vertical stacks of blocks. The catch is that only one block may be moved at a time: it may be either placed on the table or placed atop another block. Because of this, any blocks that are, at a given time, underneath another block, cannot be moved. The simplicity of this toy world lends itself readily to symbolic or classical A.I. approaches, in which the world is modelled as a set of abstract symbols which may be reasoned about. | Cut Blocks with a Razor | Literature | 1: (To). To do something astounding by insignificant means; to do something more eccentric than inexpedient. According to Dean Swift, to "make pincushions of sunbeams." The tale is that Accius, or Attus Navius, a Roman augur, opposed the king Tarquin the Elder, who wished to double the number of senators. Tarquin, to throw ridicule on the angur, sneered at his pretensions of augury, and asked him if he could do what was then in his thoughts. "Undoubtedly," replied Navius; and Tarquin with a laugh, said, "Why, I was thinking whether I could cut through this whetstone with a razor." "Cut boldly," cried Navius, and the whetstone was cleft in two. This story forms the subject of one of Bon Gaultier's ballads, and Goldsmith refers to it in his Retaliation: 2: "In short, `twas his [Burke's] fate, unemployed or in place, sir, 3: To eat mutton cold, and cut blocks with a razor" Source: Brewer's Dictionary. | |

Turns valve to regulate flow of water to carbon cooling chamber. Observes signal light on hopper which indicates hopper is filled and paste is discharged into mold. Starts mechanical vibrator to pack mix in mold. Moves levers to synchronize rotation of index table with dropping of ram to press mix into blocks. Adjusts ram stroke to press carbon block to specified size, using wrench. Stops press when warning light indicates malfunction or when mold is overheated. Removes rejects from conveyor, using pneumatic ram. (references) | |

Observes and records temperature, pressure, and time interval of agitation cycle. Pumps cooled pulp slurry to reactor tank and flushes hydropulper tank with water. Starts reactor, adjusts temperature and pressure controls, and adds measured amounts of liquid fertilizers and plastic binders. Tests acidity of solution by titration and adds ingredients as needed to attain prescribed level. Pumps mixed slurry to storage tank for further processing. Flushes reactor tank with water.
