Common Expressions: BIBLIA PAUPERUM

ExpressionsDefinition
Biblia pauperumThe Biblia pauperum ("Paupers' Bible") was a tradition of picture Bibles beginning in the later Middle Ages. They sought to portray the historical books of the Bible visually. Unlike a simple "illustrated Bible", where the pictures are subordinated to the text, these Bibles placed the illustration in the centre, with only a brief text or sometimes no text at all. Words spoken by the figures in the miniatures could be written on scrolls coming out of their mouths. To this extent one might see parallels with modern cartoon strips. (references)

Biblia PauperumArtLatin for "Bible of the Poor," a block book issued in large numbers beginning in about 1450, consisting mainly of pictures with explanatory text in Latin or German providing lessons from the Scriptures. According to Jean Peters (The Bookman's Glossary, Bowker: 1975), this form of book was not superseded by the invention of movable type, but continued to be produced into the early part of the 16th century.
