The name Belinda is a common female first name of unknown meaning. It could be a combination of Italian bella "beautiful" with either, "Be-Linda" of Spanish origins for Beautiful, Germanic lind "serpent" or linde "soft, tender". Therefore, it is often interpreted as "beautiful serpent", though its meaning and origins are still contested. Serpents have long been used in ritual to induce visions. (e.g. Temple of the Oracle at Delphi, Ancient Celts.) The serpent's traditional meaning was very positive and powerful. Hence the Celtic meaning of Belinda: "enchanting beauty." Several books of given name etymology define "Belinda" to mean "serpent, symbol of wisdom and immortality." It is not known in what belief system a serpent symbolizes wisdom and immortality.
