When the farmer returns to the original side, he has the choice of bringing either the fox or the beans across. If he brings the fox across, he must then return to bring the beans over, resulting in the fox eating the goose. If he brings the beans across, he will need to return to get the fox, resulting in the beans being eaten. Here he has a dilemma, solved by bringing the fox over and the goose back again. Although its principal ingredient is of Mesoamerican origin, the recipe no doubt has antecedents in Europe. The recipe varies considerably, but generally consists of navy beans stewed with pork or rendered pork fat. Refried beans Refried beans (frijoles refritos) are a Mexican dish of cooked beans, typically black or pinto beans, reheated in cooking oil, traditionally lard but recently vegetable oil. Usually, onion, garlic, and spices are sauteed in the oil before the beans are added. The recooked beans are then partially or completely mashed and bean stock is added if the consistency is too dry.
