Vila das Aves Vila das Aves, population 8492 (2001 Census) area 6.07 km² is an important village of the municipality of Santo Tirso, Portugal located 6 km northeast of the city of Santo Tirso, it has very important industrial sector especially in the textile sector. It borders Braga's district through the parish of Lordelo. The river Vizela is an affluent to Ave's river, and the pollution from the heavy textile industry removes the beauty of its green borders, rendering it black and foamy most of the time. Vila das Aves is nowadays the second most important urban center in the municipality of Santo Tirso; although with sparse construction, there are some important real estate investments, and a lot of young people has chosen to live there because of it's high quality and low cost of life. One of the most degrading pictures is, however, the industrial remnants of a once vital and flourishing economic activity. Throughout all the area, and not only Vila das Aves (which means village of the birds), abandoned factories, some of them architectural monsters, dominates part of the landscape, like ghost houses, where thousands of people have worked for all their lives. Not so long ago, in changing shift hours, the rush was enormous. Today, the area faces huge problems with unemployment and social instability. However, as part of the spirit of the people, new solutions are upcoming, and a trend exists towards a community of services and commerce. (references)
