Assyrian Captivity After the defeat of the northern kingdom of Israel by the ancient Assyrians and the fall of Israel's capital of Samaria, an unknown number of the population of Israel was subsequently de-ported by the Assyrians into their own empire in Mesopotamia, according to standard practices of the subjugation of conquered peoples by the ancient Assyrian Empire at the time. The Israelites were dispersed and assimilated into the empire, beginning the historic diaspora of Israel, forming the basis of the story about the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel, and the subsequent replacement theology of most of the organized Christian churches. The Assyrians then reportedly re-populated the territory of the northern kingdom of Israel with mixed peoples from within different parts of their own empire, who adopted some of the religious beliefs and culture of the Israelites who had remained there or who subsequently returned; but mixed them with their own cultures and pagan religious beliefs, and inter-married with the Israelites. Their descendants became known as the Samaritans, probably named after the former capital city of Samaria, and spoke Aramaic, the language that probably remained dominant until the time of Jesus of Nazareth, when the region, controlled by the pagan Romans, became known as the Galilee. Jesus recruited most of His disciples and performed most of His miraculous ministry there, and was confronted by the religious leaders of the Pharisees, who once called Jesus a Samaritan, although He was a Jewish rabbi. Assyrian Church of the East The Assyrian Church of the East is a Christian denominational body that traces its origins to the See of Babylon, said to be founded by Saint Thomas the Apostle. It sometimes calls itself the Assyrian Orthodox Church, but should not be confused with the distinct Syriac Orthodox Church, which is an Oriental Orthodox body. In India, it is known as the Chaldean Syrian Church. In the West it is often known, inaccurately, as the Nestorian Church. (references)
Assyrian Democratic Movement The Assyrian Democratic Movement (ܙܘܥܐ ܕܝܡܘܩܪܛܝܐ ܐܬܘܪܝܐ, Zowaa Dimuqrataya Aturaya) is an ethnic Assyrian political party in Iraq. (references)
Assyrian Genocide The Assyrian Genocide (ܩܛܠܥܡܐ ܕܐܬܘܪܝܶܐ) was an alleged genocide against the Assyrian population of the former Ottoman Empire. Those supporting the genocide theses claim that the Assyrian population of North Mesopotamia (specifically the Hakkari region in modern-day south-eastern Turkey and the Urmia region in north-western Iran) were forcibly relocated and massacred by Turkish and Kurdish forces during the years 1914-1922 under the regime of the Young Turks. Assyrian Neo-Aramaic Assyrian Neo-Aramaic is a modern Eastern Aramaic or Syriac language. Assyrian Neo Aramaic is not to be confused with Assyrian Akkadian, or the Old Aramaic dialect that was adopted as a lingua franca in Assyria in the 8th century BC. Although this latter Aramaic is also an Aramaic language, it is incomprehensible to speakers of the modern language. Originally, Assyrian Neo-Aramaic was spoken in the area between Lake Urmia, north-western Iran, and Siirt, south-eastern Turkey, but it is now the language of a worldwide diaspora. Most speakers are members of the Assyrian Church of the East. (references)
Assyrian Patriotic Party The Assyrian Patriotic Party is a political party in Kurdistan, Iraq. (references)
Assyrian people Assyrians are an Assyrian-speaking minority inhabiting northern Iraq, northeastern Syria, southeastern Turkey and northwestern Iran, some of whom are also identified as Aramaeans, Syriacs and Chaldeans. They are the heirs and descendants of the formerly extensive Assyrian Empire, and thus the original inhabitants of much of Iraq and Syria. Nowadays, the survivors are a persecuted indigenous minority in the Middle East with their own language and religion. It is likely that a significant proportion of the ethnically Arab citizens of modern-day Iraq and Syria are the descendants of ethnic Assyrians who, voluntarily or by force, assimilated into the Arab Muslim population and thus lost their original ethnic identity. Assyrian Siege of Jerusalem In 721 BCE, the Assyrian army captured the Israelite capital at Samaria and carried away the citizens of the northern kingdom into captivity. The virtual destruction of Israel left the southern kingdom, Judah, to fend for itself in the whirlwind of warring Near Eastern kingdoms. At the time of Samaria's fall, there existed two kings in Judah — Ahaz and his son Hezekiah — who ruled as co-regents. Judah existed as a vassal to Assyria during this time and was forced to pay an annual tribute to the powerful empire. (references)

The Assyrian The Assyrian is a 1987 novel by Nicholas Guild. Together with its companion sequel, The Blood Star, the two volumes tell the history of Tiglath, the fictional half-brother of Easarhaddon, a historical king of Assyria. The novels are notable for a consistently high moral tone and for the feeling of immediacy present in the many vignettes that offer pictures of everyday life and, not incidentally, a kind of travelogue of the ancient Mediterranean.
