Argus (automobile) The Argus was a German automobile manufactured between 1901 and 1909. The company was founded by Paul Jeannin, and originally built copies of Panhard & Levassor cars; they also featured P&L engines, and most of the other components of the vehicles came from France. In 1903 the company began producing engines of its own design; Argus cars now had 2380cc two-cylinder engines, and 4960cc and 9240cc four-cylinder engines. The cars were luxurious, and quite expensive as well. (references)

Argus As 14 Shuttered intake engine capable of speeds greater than those attainable by piston/propeller during the 1940s. The design was quite simple in that like all jet engines it was based upon the principle of expanding gasses. This principle is as old as steam. The shutters at the forward larger diameter part of the engine open when the engine is moved forward in the atmosphere. Fuel is injected behind the intake. The fuel is ignited by spark devices (plugs). The fuel ignites and due to the expansion closes the shutters. The thrust is directed through the narrow part (smaller diameter) portion of the engine. The pressure in the engine after partial ignition drops. The shutters re-open due to forward motion through the atmosphere and the cycle is repeated. Range is determined by available fuel. Cutoff capability might have been available in later designs. (references)

Argus was once Canada's most powerful conglomerate; by the 1970s it controlled Canadian Breweries, Dominion Super Market, Standard Broadcasting and Massey-Ferguson, as well as other major Canadian companies. Argus was acquired in 1978 by Conrad Black; Black and his associates sold off most of the assets. In 2005 Argus controls only Black's Toronto-based holding company Hollinger Incorporated. Argus itself is controlled by Ravelston Corporation Limited -- itself a holding company controlled until 2005 by Black and his long-time associate David Radler. (references)

After a four year conversion at Harland and Wolff in Belfast the ship entered RFA service in 1988, replacing RFA Engadine in the aviation training role. Since the Argus has proven to be a versatile vessel, serving in many wars. Argus was fitted with a fully functional hospital for the 1991 Gulf crisis, which has since been added to providing a fully functional, 100 bed hospital. It is equipped with the best of equipment: x-ray facilities, CAT scanner, ITU ward etc. Casualties can be quickly transferred from the deck directly into the assessment area. In recent conflicts, the ship's role as a primary casualty receiving ship (referred to as such rather than a hospital ship as the vessel is armed, thus not meeting the Geneva Convention definition of a hospital ship) has been more prominent than its aviation training duties. Argus

There are six figures in Greek mythology named Argus or Argos (Άργος).

  1. Argus Panoptes (Argus "all eyes") is a giant with a hundred eyes. He was also the nymph Io's nephew.
  2. Argus was the eponym of the city of Argos. The son of Zeus and Niobe, daughter of Phoroneus, he succeeded his uncle Apis as King of Phoronea, which he renamed after himself. According to one account, he married Evadne, the daughter of Strymon and Neaera, and bore Ecbasus, Peiras, Epidaurus and Criasus. According to another account, his wife was nameless, and his sons were Peiras, Phorbas, and Tiryns.
  3. Argos is the long-lived dog of Odysseus in the Odyssey.
  4. Argus in the tale of the Argonauts is a shipwright, the builder of the ship the Argo, which is named after him. The vessel was used by Jason in his quest for the Golden Fleece, Jason and his compatriots called themselves Argonauts, after the ship.
  5. Argus was the eldest son of Phrixus and Chalciope, daughter of Aeëtes. Argus and his brothers set out to return to their grandfather's kingdom of Orchomenus, but were shipwrecked and rescued by the Argonauts. Argus and his brothers Cytissorus, Melas and Phrontis aided Jason and the Argonauts in their quest, and later returned with them to Greece.
  6. Argus is the son of Phineus and Danaë, in a rare variant of the myth in which she and her two sons (the other being Argeus) travel to Italy.
