History of Arabian physicians Anatomical learning, thus neglected by European nations, is believed to have received cultivation from the Asiatics. Of these, the Arabs and Saracens, had gradually coalesced under various leaders; and by their habits of endurance, as well as of enthusiastic valour in successive expeditions against the eastern division of the Roman empire, had acquired such military reputation as to render them formidable wherever they appeared. After a century and a half of foreign warfare or internal animosity, under the successive dynasties of the Omayyads and Abbasids, the Saracens began, under the latter dynasty of princes, to recognize the value of science, and especially of that which prolongs life, heals disease and alleviates the pain of wounds and injuries. The caliph Mansur combined with his official knowledge of Moslem law the successful cultivation of astronomy; but to his grandson Mamun, the seventh prince of the line of the Abbasids, belongs the merit of undertaking to render his subjects philosophers and physicians. By the directions of this prince the works of the Greek and Roman authors were translated into Arabic; and the favour and munificence with which literature and its professors were patronized speedily raised a succession of learned Arabians. The residue of the rival family of the Omayyads, already settled in Spain, was prompted by motives of rivalry or honourable ambition to adopt the same course; and while the academy, hospitals and library of Bagdad bore testimony to the zeal and liberality of the Abbasids, the munificence of the Omayyads was not less conspicuous in the literary institutions of Cordova, Seville and Toledo. Old South Arabian Old South Arabian is a geographic term for four closely related languages spoken in the southern portion of the Arabian Peninsula. These languages are distinct from Classical Arabic, hence Old South Arabian and not Old South Arabic. The four languages are Sabaean, Minaean, Qatabanian, and Hadramautic. It had its own writing system, of which its origins are unknown, but its similarities to the writing systems of North Semitic languages suggest a common origin. The arrival of Islam virtually disintegrated Old South Arabian, as Classical Arabic became the lingua franca of the region. Today, Old South Arabic exists in a few ancient texts. It has contributed to the local Arabic dialects of the region in much of the same way that Coptic has contributed to the Egyptian dialect of Arabic. (references)

South Arabian South Arabian is a technical designation within Semitic linguistics for one of two main branches of South Semitic. (The other branch, Ethiopian, covers all South Semitic languages spoken on the African continent.) Geographically, the term "South Arabian'" covers South Semitic languages spoken on the southern Arabian peninsula in modern Yemen and Oman and the island of Soqotra, part of Yemen - i.e. those not found in Africa. All the contemporary South Arabian languages are spoken by tiny populations under constant pressure from the dominant position of Arabic in the surrounding populations. Literacy in these languages among native speakers is practically nil. (references)
South Arabian alphabet The ancient South Arabian alphabet (also known as musnad) branched from the Proto-Sinaitic alphabet in ca. the 13th century BC. It was used in the Sabaean and Minaean kingdoms on the southern Arabian Peninsula. Early forms dating to the 8th century BC are found in Babylonia. Its mature form was reached around 500 BC, and its use continued until the 7th century, when it was displaced by the Arabic alphabet. The alphabet spread to Ethiopia, where it evolved into the Ge'ez alphabet, the basis of the modern Amharic, Tigrinya and Tigre alphabet. (references)
