Bible Aquila eagle, a native of Pontus, by occupation a tent-maker, whom Paul met on his first visit to Corinth (Acts 18:2). Along with his wife Priscilla he had fled from Rome in consequence of a decree (A.D. 50) by Claudius commanding all Jews to leave the city. Paul sojourned with him at Corinth, and they wrought together at their common trade, making Cilician hair-cloth for tents. On Paul's departure from Corinth after eighteen months, Aquila and his wife accompanied him to Ephesus, where they remained, while he proceeded to Syria (Acts 18:18, 26). When they became Christians we are not informed, but in Ephesus they were (1 Cor. 16:19) Paul's "helpers in Christ Jesus." We find them afterwards at Rome (Rom. 16:3), interesting themselves still in the cause of Christ. They are referred to some years after this as being at Ephesus (2 Tim. 4:19). This is the last notice we have of them. Source: Easton's 1897 Bible Dictionary.

Aquila (constellation) Aquila (Latin for Eagle), is one of the 48 constellations listed by Ptolemy and is now also part of the list of 88 constellations acknowledged by the IAU. It lies roughly at the celestial equator. The alpha star, Altair, is a vertex of the so-called "Summer Triangle". (references)
Aquila (Roman) The signa militaria were the Roman military ensigns or standards. The most ancient standard employed by the Romans is said to have been a handful of straw fixed to the top of a spear or pole. Hence the company of soldiers, belonging to it, was called Manipulus. The bundle of hay or fern was soon succeeded by the figures of animals, of which Pliny the Elder (H.N. x.4, s5) enumerates five: the eagle, the wolf, the minotaur (Festus, s.v. Minotaur.), the horse, and the boar. In the second consulship of Marius (104 BCE) the four quadrupeds were laid aside as standards, the eagle (Aquila) being alone retained. It was made of silver, or bronze, with outstretched wings, but was probably of a small size, since a standard-bearer (signifer) under Julius Caesar is said in circumstances of danger to have wrenched the eagle from its staff and concealed it in the folds of his girdle (Flor. iv.12). Aquila Airways Aquila Airways was founded by Barry Aikman using two ex Royal Air Force Short Sunderland flying boats for freight work. During the Berlin Airlift a further 10 Sunderlands were acquired, flying from the River Elbe to Lake Havel. In association with BEA and BOAC Aquila later operated scheduled and charter flights from Southampton to Portugal, Spain and Jersey, as well as freight work as far as Australia. In 1952 Short Solents were acquired second hand. Facing competition from land based aircraft and unable to obtain replacement flying boats (offers to purchase the prototype Princess boats having been rebuffed), the company ceased operations in 1958, (leaving TEAL as the only long range flying boat passenger airline). Serafino dell' Aquila Serafino dell'Aquila (1466-1500), Italian poet and improvisatore, was born in 1466 at the town of Aquila, from which he took his name, and died in the year 1500. He spent several years at the courts of Cardinal Sforza and Ferdinand, duke of Calabria; but his principal patrons were the Borgias at Rome, from whom he received many favors. Aquila seems to have aimed at an imitation of Dante and Petrarch; and his poems, which were extravagantly praised during the author's lifetime, are occasionally of considerable merit. His reputation was in great measure due to his remarkable skill as an improvisatore and musician. His works were printed at Venice in 1502, and there have been several subsequent editions.
